Some of the farmers in the hill areas nay tnoy do not remember of having soon the squirrels so numerous lot many years jas they are this season Usually the rodents do not seriously damage the grain by cutting it urftll it has attained considerable height oeveral weeks later In the mason, but this season they already ,byo .dons much cuttlug jn many of the winter wheat fields. No one here reports very satisfactory results In poisoning yet' this season. Apparently the squirrels db not take to the. polsqn very readily during the cool weather. SYNOPSIS: When Ocoryle Ro ved TowHBcntt leaves on a busl lies. trip with her employer, Orat ion Matching, her cousin Jenny la left to look after Gcoryle'a new husband, Eddie, who haa had a nerve breakdown. Georgle has told Matching that Jenny la lid' die's tetfe, In order to keep her job. Jenny secretly lovca Q arlh Aveney. Chapter 21 iH.OLLPAY FROM FLYING JENNY set her Hps and unlocked the door. There was no scuffling behind it this time Eddlo eagerly faced her; color was In his face and light In his eyes. Except for the bandages, ho looked, for tills moment, the big, confident, rather dense Eddie tbo wonder "bird-man" who had hold Georgia's, Iqvo. Jenny's heart ached for him. "She had to dash straight oft. On business," she said slowly; and added, hoping that she might be given the blame "Perhaps I mado a mistake; I told her you wero asleep." "And she wont away?" At Jenny's nod, he sat down again in tlie battered old chair. When she romoved the wreckage of the lirst cup qt coffee from the floor and poured him n second, she looked at him timidly. "I wasn't asleep exactly,"-he said, to dinner, she again heard a plane go qver the building. But . Eddie, Immensely amused, by her (racoun tor with the ogre, remained blessed ly unaware; Aid she felt more hope ful about him. If he could be kept interested in other things tor a while, he would surely recover! "And so on Wednesday evening, Clndorolla goes to the ball," she concluded lightly. "In a silver dresB and sllvor slippers, all given her by her fairy god-mother." "Georgle?" ' "Goorgle." The laughter left bis taco. He began to rub bis knee with .bis band, an action- she instinctively dreaded. She was Just going to say "Don't wqtry!" when iio said It. "No use my worrying. 1 a'poso. Things'!! come straight. And, any- i way, It's all my fault for playing the fool with that car yesterday. Bit I of n miracle you weren't qither of you killed. Georgle always said 1 ', was no good on the road. By the way" tbo rubbing hand clenched i' as bo turned nUsous-ej'es .upon Jenny "xou won't tell ne,r, yvill you?" "Tell ber w.fcat, ;Edd(e?" .Japny asked. "Why, that I get uorvy .about about .other qbaps crashing on to mo and about tbo Idea- of going up myself."- Seagulls Lend Aid To Idaho Farmers Fighting 'Hoppers PQOATELLO. They arrived In inoreaslug numbers from the American Fulls reservoir and immediately fell upon the Insects. Nature also lent her assistance with cold rains and lowering temperatures, which quieted the movements of the grasshoppers. A return of warm woather Is , expected to revive thorn and increase tholr numbers. Farmers whose lands are affectec" jolued forces with olllcialu of Ban nock and Bingham counties and the Fort Hall Indian Reservation and more than 200 men were stretched along a 20-mllo front, contesting the advance of the winged army. Senator John Thomas telegraphed from Washington that 8600 had been made available by the gaverumeut to fight the hoppers, and Bingham.. coun ty commissioners appropriated $200 to buy poison bait. Alfonso Gonzales Beaten by Steele SEATTLE. June 2 IIP) Alfonso Gon zales, Los Angeles welterweight, was added to Freddie Steele's list of vlc-' timc in a six-roitud boxing bout here last night, i The Tacoma two-fisted' puncher captured every round and floored Gonzales for a nine-count in the second. The Callfornlan appeared afraid to open up and Steele gave him a severe beating. Gonzales scaled 148',4 pounds and Frcddlo 147. - Rosalllo Caballero, Sacramento ban tamweight, burled his bead In his CLASSIFIED ADS TUB MARKET I'LACB OF UNION 4 WALLOWA COUNTIt I Jenny set her lips and unlocked the door. after a gulp of coffee. "I sort of collapsed. My nerves seem a bit upset. 1 get unable to move, even when 1 want to. ... I say, Jon, this coffee. U coffee. Got any more?" 'plenty." She poured it, ber heart a little lighter. He refused to be lieve, apparently, that it was .she 'who had keptGeorglo from him; but he was not angry with Georgle, either, for going away without a good-bye. Or was he angry? He looked unusually thoughtful. "When Georgle gets back," he said suddenly, "there's no reason why she and I shouldn't have our honeymoon and then settle down somewhere. Is there? After all, shs was only going to ltccp on with this Job of hers until I got back from Mexico and I shan't be going to Mexico now." , "Don't you tblnk," she ventured "that lust because you can't go to Mexico, Georgia bad better lio;d on to her Job for a time? Then you could keep your money some of your money," she amended hastily as bis frown deepened "until you're flying again or or doing something else. In the meantime, you could rest and get your nerves back to normal, lou need a noil day badly." "Yes," hOagrocd. "1 need a holi day from flying. That's all a holi day." He caught at her arm his own shaking. Georgle seemed to Blip from his mind. "They can't expect me to fly the Old Man to night when 1 need a holiday so darn badly, can they?" , "Mr. Matching Is going by train," Jenny reassured blm. Then she grasped at an excuse for Georgle that ought, she felt, to havo oc curred to ber before. "Mr. Match ing came In with Georgle Just now, Eddie, and waited to take her In bis car. 1 refused to open this door and let blm talk to you; and so Georgia couldn't got In, either." "Locked the Old Man out. did you?" Eddie threw his bead back and gave his old, familiar roar of laughter. "Marvelous kid! Go on. let's bear about It!" ' Sbe let blm bear about it. She made quite au amusing yarn of II. In tbe end, and while she paused to let blm laugb over the Invitation I certainly won't tell her If you don't want me to." . - ' - i "Thanks. I don't fancy Goorgle will have much uso for me now, you see." His tone troubled her. "I think you're wrong. Georgle told me herself that she cares more about you than about her Job." She hasn't sold that since " he pointed to his bandages. "Sbe has she has! Jenny was triumphant. "She told me Just now, while she was hurling her things to gether to go away. And she doeBn't say such things lightly. Only, you see, Eddie, she's more practical r.nd far-sighted than you or If she loves you so much that sbe wants you to be quite free of worries while you're having your holiday. She said that, too. That's why she's determined to hold on ; to ber Job until you're flying again or until" She hesitated over tbe alternative as she bad hesitated before. "Or until you'ro doing something else, Instead." ' He grinned wrlly and she knew bo wanted to say that there was nothing he could do but fly. But IJ' went on grinning crookedly at her and presently ho remarked: "You're a good kid; 1 say, Jen, It's funny, but 1 feel better stead ier when you're around. Kind of sootCing, you are. Wonder If you could pull me round In time?" Jenny flushed with pleasure. Sbe looked Into the big, bandaged, wist ful face and then ber own went down upon her outspread arms and she was crying as she bad not cried tor years. Rl,e felt Eddie hovering above he, concerned and sbeeplBh. With a great effort Jenny con trolled herself and sat up. "Nobody has ever really needed me before, In all my lite. People always seem to to bs going away and leaving me gaping after them " Her voice trembled but she got up briskly. "I should like to try and cure yau most awfully. And I believe I could, too." (CdpvrlgM. Julia Clelt-AiUamt) A note from Aveney explains to Jenny tomorrow why ho brokt his engagement with her. . ACROSS 1 tJot kept 6. High cards 9. Period Qf light 12. Scent 13.
