PROGRESS OF CHURCHES,
During the past ten years there have been, numerous
indications of a decline in the power of churches. Great
numbers of small churches have been abandoned,. or; merged
with others. Religious folk have ' lamented the fact tyat
there are more preachers than churches, and that many of
ih nivmnhnra who are in active service are undei-pmd.
Many.ohil'rchos liavq experienced, a, falling off in both mem
bership and attendance, and consequent qiiAiciMi -'
ing financial responsibilities. - , ft .
These silrns were evident at the peak of prosperity j in
1929 and one, might naturally expect that -the., recent times

5 Deeper investigation of the matter reveals that th.de-
.creasing number of theological students, is a healthy condi

half a dozen struggling along with run-down buildings
undcr-naid preachers, ever-increasing debts, and petty de
nominationul rivalries.
Denominational lines have been fading considerably m re
cent venrs. and though ultimate union of all polestant
churches now seems improbable, much progress undoubtedly
will be made in that direction within the. next few years.
Present economic necessity is encouraging church, unions
