Rosendrihl, master of the Akron, for the big airship's sudden ascent after snapping its cable, as efforts were being mode to moor It. At a height of about 175 feet, one of the sailors tired. He lost his grip and fell to tho earth. few feet farther up, another of the trio gave out, and he, too. fell to the ground. Both were killed Instantly. They were Robert H. ttdsall of South Bend, Ind., and Nigel Hon ton of Fresno, Cat. The third flnllor, C. M. Cowart, 10, climbed up tho rope until ho reached a "toggle" a cross bar of wood spliced between the rope. For more than two hours, he dangled beneath the dirigible as It maneuvered over the field, tho ship at times reaching a height of 2500 feet. Sowart, calm ly sitting on the toggle waited until such time as members of the crew of the Akron could be spared to pull htm through a hatch and Into the airship. So Trouhle at first Commander Rosendahl said the Akron had first approached the field without trouble. "We came down nicely," he said, "but just as we neared the mast with the ground crew hanging on tho ropes we seemed to hit a cold air strata, and the Akron shot up." The cold air strata caused the helium in the dirigible to contract, sending It upward with terrific force. The Akron was to depart today for Sunnyvale, near San Francisco. She later was to take part in naval maneuvers with the Pacific fleet, but the date for her Joining the water ships was uncertain.
