She visited the fitting room..; She met some customers who cailetl tor her. One was Slana Close. Diana did not buy anything. , , "I had a letter from Marge yes terday. She's coming home before Christmas." "That's nice." KlU? could say It quite calmly,' becauBe-she felt no smallest interest in Marge's com ing or staying away. "Mrs. Frewl Some one to see you." It was Josle again, in the office door. Kitty went , out to the waiting room. She gave a little glad cry. David stood there. . "Oh, 1 wanted you to come to day!" i - : "Did you think I'd forget what day it is?" . "But you're Bo busy" ' "Not too busy for that.- What say to celebrating?" ' ; :"But I can't" ' "Of . course you can, Mrs. Frew, put lb Josle from the office door. "Mrs, Somerset will be down after lunch and It we got In a jam Miss Foster can come out." ' "Of course you can," echoed David, laughing. "We'll drive out to the llttlo house if you'll uso your cut:1 " ' . "Oh;. David; I'd iove that!" - i "I've telephoned Mrs.' Dundy to have some lunch ready tor us. Put on your bonnet, quick." : "But bow did you know I'd go?" ' "I Intended to kidnap yon it you balked at all. This Is my day as. much as yours." The hew Dnvld, assertive, charm ing, (pirited. Ho wore a new suit, a new hat. "It seems to me you are looking particularly . well, to-day, Mr. Frew!" They drove twlftly out ot the city, out Into a rus3et-browh and gold country. The wind In hor face brough. the old high color to Kitty's cheeks; hor eyes had darkened In the old way of delight ' "it's been five Weeks since I've seen youl" ' "Don't I know thai?" He told her of changes he'd been making In the new book, ot the people he'd mot. David, going ahead, she thought. Well, sho woo," too. And she told him ot the precious balance that marked the success of the shop. "It'B a. gb, David," .. : "Of course. I knew It would bo." "I'm most pleased on account of Carol. Sometimes I can't believe she's the same girl. And Pnul'8 Betting well, he's nice, David, I like him now." - . Sho told the latest of Dorcas, laughing. Dorcas had gone to live with her Aunt Lydla. Aunt Lydln had had ft slight stroke which mado an. Invalid of her. And she needed Dorcas. Dut Dorcas had simply transplanted her flag ot Independ ence. She'd taken Old Timer with her and Emll and Max and Mark and the others ran In and out bt Aunt Lydla's bouse, as much hi home there as they'd felt oil Ket chum Street. Mrs. Oehtle was fun ning a boarding house at 92. Sho told him of his father. "Ho's very well and I think he's happier, David.- We have good times to gother." . ;. They foUnd the little house almost burled in gold and rod-yellow leaves. Chrysanthemums were blooming In tho garden, some late roses and gladioli and dahlias lin gering, portulacl bright along the borders. A few grapes still hung on tho vines, deeply purple against the yellow leaves. "Oh, It's lovely,'' cried Kitty, drawing in a long breath. "It'B like coming home!" And then she ad ded, hastily! "That's what your father said, David, once. I don't think he'd felt that way for a long time. You made it like that for him." "Well, I'm glad." Mrs. Dundy had a lunch waiting for them. David built a fire on the hearth and they ate before It David told her amusing experiences he had had la New York, of plays he bad seen, kitty told him ot some of their nttomefi. Mr. Young, tho fire adjuster cf Portland, was a business visitor at Lostlne Friday. Ho was here In the Interest of the recent fire loss. -Lostlne Stthool Notes The L. H. 8. assembly was re markably quiet throughout .Friday. No throwing of. paperwads nor light whispering could be seen nor heard. Why? It was sneak c"ny for the bright and' shining lights of the scbol the seniors 1 It also turned out to be a holiday for the entire High school. The seniors, accom panied by their instructors, Mr. and Mrs. Williams, visited tho state hos pital, St. Anthony's hospital, tho Pendleton; Woolen, mills, and. J,ho "CollinB flour mill, oil In Pendleton. FREW1 abbott the feeling of distance between them they'd both changed, sho said to herself. ' Jan, at David's heels, was coax ing for a walk. When they had fin ished their luncheon they climbed the hill. And reaching Its top, they sat flown under tho old trees. I used to sneak away from the others and come here every day. I called it my own. Wasn't that presumptuous In me, when it's really yours?" its a big hilltop," David an swered easily. ' David bad no need, now, for lt& seclusion, Kitty thought. "Do you remember that Bret day we came here, David? How long ago It seems now. That girl that I was then is almost a Stranger to me now." She looked soberly out across tho valley, not seeing it but seeing that Kitty FreW of those days when sho had had to lean on David. What A foolish, bewildered, uncertain, blind girl she'd been! But, even think ing that, she felt a wistful tugging at her heart; there was something loncsotiie In going ahead without David! "You're happy, now?" David asked brusquely. "Yes, I guess I am.' Then sho straightened, laughed. "How absurd to put It so doubtfully! Ot courso I am! Ought 1 not to bo tvlth tho Treasure Island Shop so safely es tablished? I like tho work. I like seeing Carol so sure of horsclf. like the way your father doponds on me. I like Pound. You 'can't know how nice It is to havo Pound wait--Ing for mo when 1 go homo, to have him fuss over mo. And David, he's so proud of you, as proud r.3 your own father. He asked ; mo it ho might take Llttlo Lady to lilo room, i gave him my autographed copy to Utoep. David, ' can yon ltn'ow; how proud we all are ot you?" Ho sat clasping his knees, his chin bent to his hands. 1 "I mean" his tone was gruff, "are you contented to go on like this the rest of your lilo? Is It going to give you everything yen want?" - ' - - Sho answerod quickly. "Oh, yos, Of course." And then ns tfinugh an other voice had asked tho question, she repeated: "Ot course I nm!" She could not see his face. It waB turned from her. But she saw him give A little oppressive lift of his shoulders. ' "1 had to know that I'm going away, Kitty, abroad. Norwood wants me to write a biography. It will necessitate digging up some gay old scandals from their respectable graves. Norwood says I have tho touch ho wants. I can't tell you much more about ft now." "How perfectly wonderful! David Frew, with such an assignment! Do you rememhtr when Dorcas lined to send you honvo liko a bad boy who had not dono hl3 lessons?" Hut there was a sharp pain under the lightness of hor voice. "David, when are you going?" He turned to her. He did not touch her but bis eyes betrayed his lonslng. "Oh, right away, I guess. I told Norwood that I could go now, unless Kitty, I came back hoping that you'd tell me that you needed mo. But you don't need me now. Yott'ro walking very well on your own two foot, I see. 1 ought to bo glad. But you're so young If you wero thirty or moro I could recon cile myself to seeing you contented with business. But you " "I'm no(.'" Sho cried it Involun tarily and tho words released nil i.o longing In her heart. "It isn't alt I tvant! But, David, whet olso can there be for tne?" She said It in the old troubled way of appeal to him. With the old gesture she put her hand on his arm. Ho bent swiftly and kissed her hand. "I lovo you, Kitty." Sho drew her hand away, trom bllhg. Sho put It to her face. "I'm afraid, David." Hor voice faltered. He raw a deep flush spread from hor cheek to hor throat. Ho waited, patiently, his eyes caressing her. "I've missed you awfully this year. It your not being here made a dllforenco with ovorythlng. I guess 1 do need you, David! I guess I've always needed you. What yon gave me " He drew her gently to him until her shonldcr rested in the hollow of his arm. He said no word, content to feel her relax against him, con tent to see tho happiness slowly suffusing her face. She broke the silence flret. "But, David, you ought to go to write that" "I'll wire Norwood to night that I'm staying. I'd rather work hero, Kitty with you." .
