Matthew 4 : 23. FINANCING FARMERS When the 'Reconstruction Finance Corporation was organ ized a few months ago the majority of Americans were in favor of the act, though many believed that it would aid only the bankers, the railroads, and the big industries direct ly, and that its only influence upon the lot of the common people would be indirect. ' But right here in Union county are numbers of men who will receive loans direct from the big corporation. Already more than twenty farmers of the Grande Ronde valley have made applications for crop production loans, as a result of the recent visit of E. J. Davis, field inspector for the regional office of the new organization at Spokane. Mr. Davis explained to local farmers that the plan pro vides for the making of loans of amounts not to exceed $400 for the purchase of seed, feed for teams, fuel and oil for tractors, and for other expenses necessary in the production of the 1932 crops. .The farmers will be allowed to borrow at the, rate of $3 per acre for field crops where no fertilizer is used, $12 per acre for truck crops including potatoes, and up to $25 per acre for bearing' orchards. In order to secure the loan the farmer gives a first mort gage on the crop he is raising, and the amount is to be paid on or before November 30, 1932. No money is to be loaned to any person who has any other means of livelihood than fanning, nor to any person who was not engaged in farming in 1931. The loans are for bona fide farmers only. This plan practically guarantees the money necessary for putting in the crops of Union county this season, and makes it possible for the farmers who need such aid to obtain money at only 51a per cent interest. The committee rip pointed for supervising the loans in this county is composed of F. L. Meyers, Ernest DcLong, and Frank McKennon. The consensus is that the plan provides very timely aid, that it will tide scores of farmers over the plant ing season (farmers who might otherwise be severely handi capped), and that the requirements are fair though firm. . One Hundred pje w D)i?ese have just been unpacked - - and have been marked ex tremely low for a quiclTdisposal! ' Other Papers Say: .:. , , . The latest comes from the geologists, one of whom used a column in a New York paper the other day to announce that we shall have a new ice age in no more than 10,000 years. Things of this sort are never really disturbing. The last ice age, for instance, slid a mile-high glacier along the site of what is now New York Cit.v. The next one prob ably will do the same. The Great likes will vanish; the mountains of Tennessee will be frost-bound and desolate with a thousand years of winter, and the climate of Florida will be like Labrador's climate today. Nature, evidently, believes in pushing a wot sponge across the slate every so often. All that we have and all that we have done will vanish, without a trace, a few score of cen turies hence. Then the glaciers will retreat, and a new North American continent will be ready for experiments in civilization-building by some new group of restless adven turers from around the equator. There is a fascination to that sort of picture, somehow. A proper amount of humility is good foius, and that is' precisely what we get from these scientific prophecies of doom. We are here, so to speak, on sufferance. No matter what sort of society we fabricate here, sooner or later it will be swept away and people will have to begin all over again. Keeping that idea in mind is one way of avoiding an oer stuffed ego. PISHING SKASON' SI'KCIM. Tho U. S.
