' 1 "The tonsils ' are out now ano I feel almost like a new man," Mickey told me when I saw him in Fort Myers. "I've gotten back the weight I lost and I never felt better." From Connie Mack, right on down the line, the A's rely so much on Cochrane that they do not conceal their delight at his apparent return to form.'?-He is withoiit'question the nerve-center, the spark " that sets off the fighting spirit of the Ameri can league champions. They didn't fall from their high estate as world's champions until tho opposition happened to find Mickey off form and make the most of it by running more or less wild on the bases GABBY TABS ONE One of Gabby Street's tips for tho season is to keep an eye on Jensen, tho fleet young Pittsburgh outfield er. This house would be best on a lot 60x125 feet, but couM fit on a lot 60x100 feet or longer. With the -mar kets on materials running below their normal levels, the cost approxi mately would run between $6000 and $7006, a large portion of which may b-d obtained on mortgage. chieftain, Jensen Is in a fair way of becoming one of the outstanding stars of the league, Just as big a sen sation as were tho Waner boys when they broke Into the big show. TOO HARD TO SPELL Oscar Roettger, the A's choice for a first base understudy of Jim my Foxx, has always had some diffi culty getting his name properly pronounced. Even Connie Mack re fers to him as "Reteger," as do most of the exhibition ball park announc ers. i Five or six years ago, when he was upon trial with Brooklyn as a pitcher, 'Roettger one day primed himself for a chance to see what he could do at first base. Uncle Wllbert Robinson had told "him to try the job. ... It was a home game for the Dodgers so Roettger sat on the bench until his turn to go to bat. To his surprise, however, and with out . any warning he found .himself challenged by the rival . club the Giants and discovered that Hend rlck was listed in his place. The explanation, typically Borln sonian, was that when it came time to write out the batting order and Bobble was asked how to spell Roettger's name he finally gave It up as a bad job and said: "Hell, leave him out and put in Hcndrick." TRY SOMETHING NEW THIS YEAR Variety Is the spice of life In vege tables as well as anything else. It pays to vary the crop each year, try ing new varieties. Usually these claims prove to be well founded and by growing Improved varieties each year you produce a better garden and more tempting food- supplies. Sweeter peas and corn, tenderer and snappier radishes, beans devoid of any vestige of strings, tomatoes of beautifully regular shape for slic ing, all these are .merely matters of studying the seed catalogues and or dering the right varieties of seeds More peas to the pod with on equal number of pods Is an Inducement that should not be overlooked. The new giant podded dwarf peas of fine quality are worth a atrial if you haven't had them and it is likely you will discard the shorter podded older varieties in their favor. Sow a packet of some of the finer new tomatoes. Study lists of new vegetables and try a few of them. They are usually selected types of well tried varieties or varieties that show decided im provement in some respect or other from the older sorts. They have all had to stand severe testing and trials before the seedsman spent his money to get a stock of seed. The quality of vegetables advances each year. There are no new vegetables of con sequence offered because- the world has been scoured Yor them and any that are eaten-by any of the various races and tribes have been tested and either put into 'commerce or fdund unpalatable for our use. The new vegetables offered are the result of special culture and selec tion ' from known strains of seed. They are the result of painstaking plant breeding and growing. Try: a few packets each season. A carrot is a carrot, but If you can get a carrot that matures earlier and produces a bigger root than the kind you have been growing at no more expense, why not got It? i Chats With Parents : " ' ab6ut laziness By Allee Jurison Pcalc When' we say a child is lazy wo mean usually that he has no interest in doing as we wish or as he should. There .really is no such thing as a child who Is lazy unless he is ill or mentally very abnormal. A healthy, ordinarily Intelligent child is always busy about . some thing, busy with his hands, busy with his head, or merely chasing around apparently doing nothing in particular, but doing it hard. It is the parent's Job to devise ways of arousing his Interest and putting some of his energy to work at the things that arc commonly demanded at his age. Tho laziest slug-a-bed, the tardiest scholar will bo up and., about his business bright and oavly If that business has been made io seem "to him worth doing. He will do his home chores beauti fully and without a word of remind ing him if he feels pride In helping and In carrying responsibility. But he will never do them will ingly Just because someone else has told him that he must. If he has a good teacher he will come promptly to school and be eag er and attentive In the class room, for she has had the skill to win his interest In the subject matter and to provide attractive ways in which he can work It out. Everjt appeal that can be made to a child's self respect and joy in accomplishment , will win response from him. . " Every undertaking that is suitable to. his level of thought and feeling, that he can illuminate with his own imagination will win his warm en thusiasm. Once a child's wilt is enlisted in an undertaking, no task is too dif ficult, too long or too complicated. ! Health ! v IIYDUOCEmiALUH The brain Is- a hollow organ, its various parts penetrated by a system of channels called vontricles which are connected togcthor and lead Into the Bplnal canal, the channel pass ing through the entire length of the spinal cord. The spaces within the brain and spinal cord are filled with a water like substance called cerebrorspinal fluid. This fluid circulates both within and about the central nerv ous system. . In certain abnormal conditions the circulation of the fluid either within or about the brain is interfered with and hydrocephalus, popularly known as water on the brain, results. There are several varieties of hy drocephalus, classified according to whether the difficulty is in the cir culation of the fluid within or out side of the brain, and whether the condition is congenital, 1. o., present at the time of birth, or Is acquired. In the most serious type, the con genital, the child is born with an Improperly developed system of brain spaces. Cerebral fluid accumulates and cannot escape, or escapes too slowly. The result is that tho brain tissues and the skull bones are subjected to pressure. The head becomes gro tesquely enlarged. Mental develop ment Is seriously hamperod, and body function thereby profoundly dis turbed. ..,.. The causes for congenital hydro cephalus are still undetermined. Some afflicted children may be born , of absolutely healthy parents and In families in which all other children have been entirely healthy. Families with several hydrocephalus children, however, are recorded. The largest number of hydroce phalic children succumb because of the condition, but some few live for years and there are cases in which CLASSIFIED ADG --THE MARKET PLACE OF UNION A WALLOWA COUNTIES (Count five average words to the line.)
