By the AftHorlntrd Prw j iA determined crew of baseball I SlfiycrB, the Oakland Acorns, had rown alongside Los Angeles' Angela toduy la a tie for second place In the Pacific Const league, while the Portland Beavers Increased a hold they have annexed on first place. The Beavers scalped Seattle's In dians S to 1 at Portland yeatertiny tmd last nlghft, While the Angela were losing 12 to 0 to the MlfMlun Reds at Brfn Francisco, the Acorns triumphed 8 to 3 over Socramento In a 13-lnnlng contest at Emeryville to move Into a second place tie with I Los Angeles. . - j In defeating Seattle, the 'Beavers got two runs on four lilts In the sec ond, adding another tally In the fourth when Johnson singled with the bases full. . Pitcher's lilt Wins (lame Pete Daglla, Oakland pitcher, de livered the hit which brought vic tory In -the 13-lnnlng contest with Sacramento. - His single scored Stev enson who had previously connected for a triple. . The Angels rallied In the ninth to score four runs, but the comeback did not last long enough. -"'' Scoring two of their runs 'on homers, Ban Prancisco'a Seals beat the Hollywood atars 6 to 4 last night at Los Angeles. The homers were banged out by Oana and Oaveney of the Ben is, while Oavtella of the Stars, accounted for one of his team's tal lies with a four-baser. Added Attraction , An added attraction In this game was an altercation between Julian Wera, Seal third Backer, - and Manager- Oscar Vltt. At tho end of the second Inning, Wera became pugilis tic over the asserted "riding" given him by Vltt and donated the man ager a couple of punches In the ieft eye which - slightly darkened the member. After getting a smooth stroke, with an easy follow through (for distance putting) It Is Just a matter of prac tice and getting the proper line. . There ore. however, really two types of putting, one for short dis tances, the other for anything be yond 10 or 12 feet. The short putt la more of a tap stroke, but It should be mnde never theless with a smooth nuition, using the wrists only and with the arms well anchored to the sides or the hips. , I m hevaa....l I have a habit myself of anchor ing my right elbow to the side to gain steadiness. Tho long putfc Is a swing. For ac curacy I usually try to pick a spot eight or ten fect from my ball, using this spot as a direction guide. Any golfer will find this is a big help in keeping to the proper line. Putting is at leust 60 per cent psychology. I see Rood players as well as duf- I fers tighten up on the greens, mak ing stabs at the ball, when all they need to do Is take a good breath and relax. Too much time spent on the put ting practice greens is as bad as none at all. Tournament players make a mis take by Indulging in putting practice before play starts. Anyone who hasn't his putting touch by- the time a tournament comes along won't find it on the practice greens. - I remember one event I entered a number of years ago at Youngs town, Ohio. I felt confident I had a good chance to win.- Before it started, however, I got. Into a syn dicate game on the practice green with a number of other pros. We battled each other for fully , two hours. When I went out to play I found I had left all my putts back there In practice. I finished nowhere. Ten or fifteen minutes' practice before any match or round of tour nament play usually is plenty. Tomorrow Take the Penalty Cincinnati Reds Change Line-Uj) ; But Cubs Wihi Bv Hugh S. FuIIerton Jr. (Associated Press Sports Writer) The Cincinnati Reds appear shy a few Important parts of a good ball club despite Manager Dan Howley's efforts to build up something like a winner. Howlev made a few more changes t yesterday, buying Harvey Hendrlck, Brooklyn utility man, to piug ine hole at first -base, and - releasing Chuck Dressen but it appears that ho has plenty of work ahead of him. Two Red outfielders, Wally Roettger and Cliff Heathcote. are pounding the ball at a .400 clip but no other player on the team Is even near the .300 mark. The return of Ed Roush hasn't worked out and Ick Cullop lias not been hitting. Joe Stripp, a ,300 hitter last year, has the best mark of the lnflelders, .268, while Chick Cucclnellc, who-was expected to do some slugging, is barely above .200. The -Reds' pitching also has been Ineffective. 61 Johnson did seven good Innings against the Cubs yes terday only to weaken and Chicago hammered out five successive hits In the eighth to tie the score at 4-4. The Cubs pushed over another run off Ray Kolp In the eleventh to win, 5-4, for Cincinnati's fifteenth de deat In 17 games. Kolp won one of the two -victories and Red Lucas, who has gone the route four times, took, the other. The league leading St. Louis Car dinals won their seventh game in a row yesterday, combining good pitching and powerful . hitting to beat Pittsburgh 11 to 5. Jess Haines gave the Pirates only seven hits while the Cards got that many In the fourth inning, putting over five runs and then coming back after a show er to add four more In the fifth. The St. Louis Browns, by far less successful than their townsmen so far, did about as well yesterday. They got started In the fifth Inning and pounded four Cleveland pitchers for a total f 17 hits. and a. 10 to 4 victory. ' George Blaeholder yielded 13 blows but he kept them well scat tered to turn In his first victory of the season. Vic Sorrell of Detroit also recorded his first, win of the year, holding the Chicago White Sox to nine hits as the Tigers won, 6 to 1. -Detroit col lected four hits and as many runs off Al Thomas before he retired the sec ond man in the opening inning. The eastern clubs of the American league had an open date as they be gan their first western trip of tbe year and - New York and Boston In the National also, were not scheduled. Brooklyn's game at Philadelphia was rained out. Baseball Standings Ity the Associated Press COAST I.KAlii H W. L.
