No nation can be said to be healths which has a large Infant mortality rate and a large proportion of deformed, crippled, and chronically infirm children. National Child Health Day, proclaimed for May 1 by the president, has for its goal a nation of strong, healthy, and happy children. Its piuose is the concentration of national thought and resources upon the development of such a nation of children. May Day means maypole dancing for millions of well, happy children, but for other millions it is a reminder of normal bodies, minds, and lives of which they have been deprived. ' America is tho land of free education, equal opportunity, high living standards, and the fullest social consciousness, and yot it produces tho following statistics on children 0,000,000 under-nourished; 1,080,858 under sixteen gainfully employed; 1,000,000 with heart trouble; 382,000 suffering from tuberculosis; 50,000 partially blind; 14,000 sightless; 342,000 with impaired hearing; 1,000,000 with defective speech ; 450,000 mentally retarded ; 200,000 delinquents ; and many others denied something necessary for tho making of perfect childhood. Need President Hoover ask for additional reasons for call ing upon the nation to observe National Child Health Day? Can anyone summon up a good excuse for not observing it? WHAT IS II BAD Newspaper editors constantly strive to keep pace with reader interest while improving their product, and are there fore interested in data which serves to indicate reader in terest m the-various features carried. Ferhaps they are somewhat surprised by some figures given last week before the American Newspaper Publishers Association in New York by A. M. Clapp, of the Clinton (Iowa) Herald. Records made from a careful survey of representative newspapers show that 33 per cent of the women and 46 per cent of the men readers of small dailies are habitual readers of the editorials, while only 3 to 19 per cent, respectively, follow the sports pages. In a lesser degree the same comparison holds true with the metropolitan readers. Eighteen per cent of their women readers and 25 per cent of the men read the editorials, while .5 per cent of the women and 29 per cent of the men turn to the sport pages first. This should put an end to the claim that the American people read only headlines and comics.
