" of Cambridge, Massachusetts Member of the Brxird of Lectureship of Tf.a Mother Church, The Flint y- Church of Christ, Scientist, , In Boston, Mnssncrrusetta i ... , , ... f. Christian Science is o vnst subject. It hnB many aspects, ovcry one Im portant, Let us confine our ntten . tlon. at this time, u one .of Its' as pects, namely, the henllng power of Christum Science. When hpnlln'g the sick. Christian Science askB' a fair field and no-favors. That is nil. It pits ever asked and that It all It ever 1U ask. Christian Science does not stand for monopolies.' It ripen not Itand for favoritism nor for .special privileges. Christian Science makes known the true nature of tho-Infinite Clod, who Is not and cannot he & respecter of persons. Ood Is uni versal and Impartial In His goodness And In His kindness. Ho bestows blesBlngs without measure upon all Ills sons and daughters. Ho docs not ?nd Ho cannot withhold any good hlng from anyone. Jesus likened nod's boundless and ceaseless bene flconce to the rain which falls for fill and the sun which shines for all. Christian Scientists arc firm be lievers In medieal freedom. Just as they are firm believers In rellfrtous liberty. Christian Scientists desire for themselves the privilege of seek ing the Rood wherever It may be found: and thev gladly concede to 1 others the same sacred privilege. Mary Baker Eddy, tho Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, onoe wrote, "I would no more quarrel with a man because of his religion than 1 would became of his art" (The First Church of Christ, Scientist; and Mis cellany, p. 3701. Mrs. Eddv always resrweted each Individual's nod-given right of self-covernment. Bhe never alalmed any right to urge even re vealed truth unan the attention of anyone. She presented the truth she 4lsooved for the consideration of those who cared to give It their con (Mention. She counseled' her foll6w Are to carry on their ministrations for mankind in the same spirit of Christian charity, humility, and good win which characterised the great Master and his true followers In the davs of primitive Christianity. St. John graphically described that aolrlt when he renresented the Christ as saving. "Behold. I stand at the door. vd knoekr if anv man hear mv vole. rd open the door, I will come In to him. and will sup with him, and he with me." . Mrs. ldy knew tho value of Chris tian htallnn. She knew that only that method of healing which Jesus taught and practiced can lift from tht shoul der of humanity the burderl of hu irsn discord end usher In the reign of eternal psace, health, and happi ness. Hence her statement on pa 344. of the Christian Science ' telt boott. "Science and Health with Key to the flcrlnt'irei": "There are: vari ous methods of treating disease, which are not Included In tho com monly accented systems; but thoro ; ml7 on? y!'!"! sl'onld! he nre senrd to the whole world, and that to the christian Blanco which Josus tKtW.wtt or.rt, practiced, end left to t:i m h'r: rich lof;n?y." Jesus healed every kind of sickness and disease. Ho healed with uniform success. The Bible clearly indicates that he healed don ens, scores, perhaps hundreds and thousands In a single day, . No one ever appealed to him In vain and there la not In all that glorious record a single failure recorded, He healed with consummate eftso. Ho healed In stantaneously. Jesus exerted hlo spiriting i f t lngtantaneous cures even where power, nnd then asked tho man ix ue I could aee. The man replied mat he i fc human conditions were most .ex- trcmc. The poet ooienage act ionn a great truth when he wrote: "He prayeth beat, who loveth best !i All things Doth great and small; -.For the dear God who loveth us, Ho made and loveth all." . Christian Hclcnoe Heals Sorrow ' Christian Science heals because It the broken-hearted. The could see men, 'but that they looked like trees walking. Then Jesus exerted thin spiritual power the second time, and the man bp.w clearly. Under standing perfectly how to heal the sick, Jesus, knew exactly how to re form the sinning, Jesus overcame death. . Ho ralaed the daughter pi Jalrua as easily aa ho healed tho man with tbo withered hand. He ordered the pro cession to stop and proeeed no far ther on Its sorrowful way. Then he spoke to the young man, who was being borne In that procession, and restored him to his widowed mother. The fact that his friend Lazarus had been dend four days, when he reached Bethany, In no way disturbed Jesus. He first thanked God for the groat proof - of man's immortality which was nbout to appear to human con soloiiRni'Hitv Then he tailed out to his'- friend. '"Lazarus, come forth!'' and Lazarus .promptly enme forth from the tomb. Jesus stilled the tem pest. r He wnlked on the waves. He fed the muHitiulivln tlie defer t; Hi did It all thrniiKh his knowledge of Onrl'ri Infinite Koodneis and Hod's In finite power. Hin entire ministry oc- humanlty must be healed. It wilt be healed when the people know Ood. If God were responsible for tho heart aches of humanity, the plight of the human race would Indeed be pitiable. But God never .causes one lota of suffering. God Is Infinite Truth and Infinite Love. Truth and Love have no kinship with sorrow or Buffering. When divine Truth and Love are un-. demtood, suffering and sorrow flee away." The human race has added much -to its. burden by erroneously boJicvlnt that God - has caused its heartaches; -and fortunately Christian Sclcnco Is dispelling this Illusion. On pane 380 of Brlenre and Health, Mrs. Eddv writes. "Error, not Truth, pro duces all the suffering on earth.';. But her Innate sense of Justice (which I learned among my earliest experi ences to honor and trust!, though a Kreat help, was not enough. A few in the laws of erring, human . con cepts." Ilout Sickness With Courage Pear is the great curse of humanity. It 1& the chief factor in all human discord and distress. It Is always a factor that lt is literally true that where there is no fear there can be no ulseasc. Consequently lt is true that whenever tho fear has been com pletely removed from human con sciousness the sypmtoms of disease whatever they may bo, vanish away. An Instantaneous healing takes place whenever divine Love reaches -tho thought of a patient; for divine Love instantaneously casta Out- fear. We are harmonious just to tho - degree that we listen to the voice of Ood and refuse to be afraid. On page -410 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes: "Christian scientific practice begins with Christ's keynote of harmony, 'Bo not afraid I' " There Are No Ileal Poisons :' Ono of the most pronounced fears of tho raco Is the fear of various kinds of poison. Fortunately this fear,' like all fears, has no true basis. . God produces and sustains everything that exlKtu, and God never made a. poison. Jesus taught that a demonstrable : knowledge of his teaching will render one immune to poisons of every name and nature. He said of his true fol- lowers, "If they "drink ; any .. deadly 1 thing, it shall not hurt them." Jesus '. knew that God never made a harmliil ' creature or thing; and what God. does ; not make has no actual existence. The ! human mind conceives of poisons of various kinds, it maps out their Bup poaed courso' of action, and then i through prevailing human opinion, ! operating as if it wcro a law, brings about the results nttribiited to the ! so-called deadly thing. The disbelief of a single individual in the supposed action of a poison is not enough to avail against the overwhelming pre- j ponderunco of human belief. But a demonstrable knowledge of God and Ocd's law Is a sure defense against tho supposed activity of evil In every form. Evil Thoughts Are Powerless Wo heed to remember that all true thoughts are God's thoughts. God's thoughts come to us with the power which they derive, from Him. They come always to bless. Blnco in God there Is no harmful clement, evil thoughts cannot proceed from God. Can they then express or possess power? Certainly not. All evil thoughts are unreal and powerless. They are nothing but false beliefs and no one can give mem power, n we years passed, and sho was pronounced ! renlIze tntB fact e shall not fear evil incurable by tho best physicians ob-. tnoUgnta or beliefs. It always has away: and Just naturally and apon- is undermining the very founds- - and her work that he never went to a single sunbeam. The Bible makes plain the fact that God is too wise and too pure to cognize or behold evil, which Is always superstitious, fallacious, unreal. .God's creatures all exist in God, tho divine Mind;, and they can and do behold only that which .God produces, loves, and sus tains. . What a comfort it Is to know that your true spiritual being, your real ego, your true selfhood, exists lp God, the divine Mind. What a com fort It la to know that In the realm of eternal reality, where you forever live, move, and have your being, no evil can ever come nor even appear to come;' for in the realm of eternal, reality God forever reigns and 'He Is infinite Life, Truth, and Love. Evil can never touch your real being, nor come Into the presence of your true being, any more than darkness can touch a sunbeam. Only the good and the beautiful can enter your peal consciousness. In realty we can cog nize only the eternal things of God. On page 17 of;"Noand Yea" Mrs. Eddy writes: ' 'In Him we live, and move, and. have our. being;' consequently it lKJmposslhle for the true man who ls:a spiritual and' Individual being, created inrthe eternal Science-of be ingto be conscious of aught .but good.". . - - ' . . ? Mrs. Eddy's Great Work Mary Baker Eddy discovered Chris-' tmn ocience in 1866.. Let us consider certain conditions which existed 'at that time. Longevity was at its low est ebb. .Disori'ics were multiplying. People looked to matter for health, and tho false belief that there can exist a host of Incurable diseases was , being accepted without challenge i Most people supposed salvation fo , bo for a select few, while the vast majority were ,' to be consigned to. eternal torment in a fire and brim- ; s'.one hell. Then enmc Mrs. Eddys : healing and her gradual discovery of , the eternal Science of being. Imme diately upon her discovery, the thought of the race began "to he leavened with eternal Truth. Truth Is omnipotent, and Its power can . never be confined. The moment it dawnB upon one human conscious- i ness It begins not only to transform f that consciousness but to make its influence felt in the thinking of others. But error always resists Truth. Mrs. Eddy met with a resist ance which we can only dimly con ceive. She stood alone, facing a hos tile world which needed tho truth, but believed it did not want lt. Her followers know something of the cruelty which she encountered, and something of the change of heart which later came to many who mis understood and rejected her teaching in those early days. I have seen a strong man shed tears of deop regret because of the hostility he once felt and expressed towards our Leader and which he was coming to recognize as completely unkind and unfair. This man was-in his early twenties when Mrs. Eddy was preaching and heating In Lynn, Massac husetts. He aaw Mrs. ly doflnod, Christian Science Is tho term which Mrs. Eddy used to desig nate God's law. God's law Is Infalli ble. ' It dan and lt will heal and re deem the entire rAce.
