In order to determine the outstanding bridge plsver m the state, to put bridge on the map as an indoor sport, and to stimulate in : teres in a national tournament soecetlme in the futue. Oregon is going to have its first state contract bridge tournament, sponsored by Llpman. Wolfe and Co. and The Ore gon lan. The tournament is open to everyone, men and women, profes siona and amateur, to determine the best bridge players cf this part cf the country. The tournament will be held on the evenings of April 22, 23. 24 and it has been rumored in La Grande bndge circles that at least enough players for two tables have been playing for the past few weeks, and have attained a degree of skill, that even with luck excluded a factor which La Grande authorities as well as nauonal authorities say plays no par; in consistently good bridge they will be able to "do La Grande proud." A few have announced their possible intention of entering but the entries will be announced later. The tournament will be held dur ing the evening in the Arabian room of the Multnomah hotel. Miss Ann Blanche Shelby, bridge editor of the Oregonian and recognized national authority, will be general supervisor cf the tournament in con junction with the members of the general committee. The tournament will be entirely between pairs, and registra tion must be made in couples, accord ing to announcement by the com mittee. Pairs entered will continue playing together throughout their stay in the tournament ranks. There is no entry fee or charge of any kind connected with the tour ney, and registration books opened this morning.
