Telephone Main Grand Opera, Golf Oust Social Events During Weekend Grand opera and golf are taking the place of many other social events this weekend. Golf Is proving an In teresting diversion for many La Grande women and the country club pro la -grooming a group of the very beat for the state tournament. -In a few more weeks the country club will be the gayest place around La Grande for many delightful events are being planned, and more atten tion Is to be given to entertaining women members who do not play golf, r Spring days, with the weather un certain, are still largely devoted to - bridge parties. Members df Alpha ; Club Entertained ' Among the parties which made Thursday one of the busiest days of the week, was the one o'clock lunch eon at. which Mrs. O. D. Putman en tertained the Alpha club at the La Grande hotel. Luncheon was served at a brightly - decorated table, bearing a center piece of cut spring flowers. Bridge followed throughout the afternoon, with Mrs. Charles Reynolds receiving the prize for high Bcore among the members, and Mrs. John Thelsen, guest prize. Mr. and Mrs. H. M. B3y will en tertain the evening Alpha club next Thursday. Mrs. J. C. Gulling ; Hostess Thursday Mrs. j; C. Gulling entertained for the Thursday Bridge club yesterday afternoon at the La Grande hotel. Luncheon was served at one o'clock . and cut spring flowers were the table decorations. ' Bridge was ployed during the af ternoon with Mrs. P. S. Ivanhoe re ceiving the prize for high score. Hoyts Entertain Three D Club Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Hoyt entertained the Three D club at their home last evening with a 6:30 dinner followed by an evening of pinochle. The din ing table was set for 12 guests. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Noyes received the prizes for high score at cards. Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Is described, and many Interesting hits of court life related, among them the splendor and mag nlflcance of the wedding of the grandduchess of Russia to the Prince of Sweden. Her connection with the Russian army In the capacity of a nurse during the war makes intriguing-reading. "The Ring of the Lotwnskolds." by Selma Lagerloff, was ably received by Miss Vivian Johnson, of the Eastern Oregon Normal school. The book is a trilogy, written on the theme of pre destination. Miss Lagerloff 1b a romantic novelist and shows In "The- Ring," the triumph over the curse of tenacity of high purpose, Miss Johnson states. Mrs. Warren Gilbert will entertain the group in two weeks at the home of Mrs. H. K. O'Brien, apartment 627, Sacajawea apartments. Mrs. Harold Pearce Entertains Club Mrs. Harold Pearce entertained the Bid 'Em and Lose 'Em club at her home Wednesday evening with two tables of bridge. The club is keeping accumulative scoresand a grand prize will be received by the member with tho highest total score. Refreshments were served late In' the evening, after which it was de cided that Miss Marguerite Zweifel will entertain the group on March 25. Auxiliary Group Meets Wednesday The Stitch and Chatter club of the American Legion auxiliary met Wed nesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. H. P. Nlelson for an afternoon de voted to sewing. - ' They made dresses and quilts for the children of disabled ex-service men, and the articles will be sent to the department chairman In Port land for distribution. A large group was present. The hostess served refreshments at the close of the afternoon. April 0 Is the date set for the next meeting. Dial Home Mike Fitzgerald and Mrs. Carrie Thompson, both of Elgin, were mar ried Tuesday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Porter Dial by Rev. A. J. Starmer, pastor of the Methodist Church South. The rooms were dec orated with sweetpeas and daffodils. - The bride wore a brown silk dress. After the ceremony a wedding sup per was served with the following guests present: Mr. and Mrs. Chris Wright, Miss Mallsse Johnson, sister of the bride; Roy Johnson, nephew of the bride; John R. Fitzgerald, brother of the groom; Mr, and Mrs. James D. Missionary Group Plans Activities The Women's Foreign Missionary society of the Methodist church met Wednesday afternoon at the home. of Mrs. E. B. Kendrick for a program and social hour. Mrs, P. E. Plerson, had charge of the devotions and the Interesting lesson which was devoted to a study of the people in Japan, China and India, wno have studied In mission schools and then returned to their own countries to become great leaders. Several events were planned for the next two months, among them a Sun day devotee to thank offerings and special church services, Mrs. E. M. Hickox haying been appointed general chairman. They also plan to celebrate Found ers' day in April with a large ban quet, the time and place to be set later by the committee composed of Mrs. Kendrick, Mrs. O. C. Headley and Mrs. R. F. Tyler, A district meeting, to which members from- circles in the western district of the Idaho con ference will be invited. Is being plan ned for May 13 and Mrs. W. H. Hert zog Is in charge of arrangements. A quilt display is to be held during May, with Mrs. E. B. Kendrick In charge. The next meeting of the group has been set for April 8, with Mrs. Healey, the leader, and Mrs. Hertzog, the hostess. Mrs. Kendrick served refreshments to a large group of women who at tended yesterday's meeting. Pathfinder Class Is Entertained Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Byers enter tained the Pathfinder class of the Methodist church at their home last night. About 45' guests enjoyed the games and stunts which formed the enter tainment of the evening. Refresh ments, in a St. Patrick's day motif, were served by the hostess, assisted by Mrs. W. F. Ashman, Mrs. Will Ad ler, Mrs. John Adsklm, Mrs. J. J. Broomfleld and Mrs. A. W. Burnett.
