By the Associated Press All eyes In the northern division of the Pacific Coast conference will turn toward Corvallis, Ore., tonight and Tuesday night to see whether Oregon "State college will have strength enough to take two basket- ball games from Washington. If the Beavers can do that, they will be tied with the Huskies at the , top of the devislon and the north ern team's chances of winning an other championship .will be gravely endangered. If Oregon State can't tako Wash ington for both games little short of a miracle can prevent the - latter from winning the title. Its record so far is perfect six straight vic tories. Oregon Overwhelmed 1 The University of Oregon quintet was burled even deeper in the cel lar by two losses to Washington last week at Eugene, 31-26 and 38-26. Oregon's record also is perfect six straight defeats. , Beginning of the annual hostilities between Oregon and Oregon State with one game at Corvallis may im prove the former's record. Jan. 2G (IP) Hclenc Madison, Seattle high school girl who Is recognized as the world's greatest woman swimmer, has started on another rampage for records what few she does not already hold. Helene added two more American marks to her- long string of figures when she cracked the 40 and 60 yard short course free style records at Bremerton, Wash., Saturday night. Miss Madison swam the 40 yards in 20 3-5 seconds to take the American mark from Corlnne Condon, New York, who covered the distance In 21 7-10. Helene's time for the 60 yards was 33 1-5 seconds compared with the old figure of 34 3-5 held by Ethel Lackie, Illinois. The sensational aquatic youth also helped crack another American rec ord when the girls' relay team of the Washington Athletic club, Seattle, bettered the 100 yard relay mark. With Helene swimming the anchor position the girls stroked the dis tance in 2 minutes 11 1-5 seconds compared with the former time of 2 minutes 16 seconds held by the New York women's association. Helene plans to go after the two moro American figures here Feb. 3 when she makes her competition be but in the Washington Athletic club pool. She will try for the 440 yard and 400 meter records. Ralph Guldahl Defeats Manero In Golf Finals LOS ANGELES, Jan. 26 One year of professional golf behind him, and Ralph Ouldahl is homeward bound for Texas today with $2793 as his earnings in competition with the countiy's leading players. The 19-year-old Dallas youth Is headed for San Antonio and the open tournament there where he stepped out of the amateur ranks twelve months ago and took up the gold dust trail of the fairways. Yesterday slender, youthful Ralph matched his best shots against the seasoned pro from New York, Tony Manero, and won the final 36 hole match in the motion picture $3200 tournament at the Riviera country club one up. 'His first place prize was $1000. Masters cf the game who were all eliminated in the first and second rounds of the motion picture tourna ment marveled at the youth's cour age yesterday. Race; Driver Killed LOS ANGELES, Jan. 26 (P) Thun dering into a turn at 75 miles an hour, four cars piled up at the Amer ican Legion speedway hero yesterday, killing one driver and Injuring three, one of them seriously. George Young, Milwaukee, Wis., speedster, was killed, while Curley Grandel, Glcndale, Cal., was seriously injured. Arvol Brunmier, Whittier, CE-, and Lester Spangler, Los Angeles, were the other victoms. The accident came on the 29th round of tho 100 lap feature event over the five-eighth of a mile track. Springier was fourth in. the race 'at the time. His car skidded about, kicking up a cloud of dust, but re maining upright. Young was unable to stop. ' His car struck Spanglcr's, swerved Into the fence on the upper slclo of tho track, where It remained poised atop the uppermost board. Brunmier and Grandel also shot into the dust cloud. Grandel's car went through, the rail and rolled down a 25-foot embankment. Brun mier's was wrecked, but remained on the track. Shorty Contlan, Detroit, went on to win the race in 61 minutes, 2 3-5 seconds. He was followed in by Mauri Rose, Earl Hovendcn and Stubby Stubblefleld, all' of Los Angeles. In that order.
