9tate, Mr, Bntson points out, the
system of chain broadcasting where
by Idontlonl programs aro broadcast
ay largo stations in various ports or
the country makes this attribute or
lessor Importance. In Europe, on the
other hand, there Is little or no chain

field of programs coming from many
glfforent countries. -ft-Moro

dio sots, representing a vuluo of ap
proximately one -and -a -half billion
dollars, are In use throughout the
World today, Mr, Bataon'a report re
veals. Porty-fivo per cent of the
World total, or 10,600,000 sets, with n
Vhluo of 070,000,000, are In the
United Htntcs. . Tlio total investmont j

balf Is represented by stations In this
country.

Sockot-power sots account for 62
tr cent of the total number In use
North America, for about ono-hnlf
Of tho sets In Europe, and onc-quar-
tnr of thrum In Rnuth America. Crvs-
tal sots are fewest In North, and
South America, representing 1 and S)
Sri cent respectively, iukI highest In
ussla and Turkey whero tho ratio
Is around U0 per cent.
In the majority of countries out
side of tho United States and Canada,
tho cont of broadcasting is paid by a
system of license fees levied on the
radio sots In use. Those fees rango
2rom as low as B0 cents In Prance to
ni high as 44 per set In Turkey. The
avoraga Jlconso fes- however, runs
betv.'een 93 and 94, As there aro ap-
eroxlmatcly 11 million radio sots In
urope, It Is apparent that the
amount puld yearly by radio fans lu
that urea Is botweon forty and forty
five million dollars. According to Mr.
Batson. there Is a definite trond In
some foreign countries toward adopt. 1
mg the American system or a spon-1
sored program. Most ioroign coun
tries, however, prefer to retain tho
license feo system, having a projudlco
gainst mixing advertising with radio
entertainment. '
Referring to tho typo . of foreign
broadcasting programs, tho report
shows that n sort of "universal" pro
gram has been adopted similar to
that used In tho United States, con
stating of music, addresses, and In
formative talks. Even sports and
news oventa are now put on the air
by foreign stations, although not to

Breeding Turkeys
Show an Increase
ROSEBURG W The annual North
western Turkey show, held each De
cember at Oakland, Ore., has re
sulted ln from 300 to 400 per cent
increase in tho sale - of breeding
turkeys by Oregon growers, J. C.
Leedy, county agent, believes.
In previous years Oregon turkeys
were sold largely for meat purposes
and breeding stock was imported
from other states. Since the show
was Inaugurated, however, there has
been a noticeable increase in the
quality of Oregon breeding stock and
sales have become an important fac
tor in the industry. Birds for breed
ing purposes sell for from 50 to 100
per cent more than those sold for
meat.
The Oregon legislature is being
asked to assist the annual show with
an appropriation which will enable
larger cash prizes to be offered. It
is proposed next year to hold the
show for four days Instead of two if
the special assistance rcauest-ed from
I the state is obtained.
