Food and air are two essentials without which life Is not possible for long. -. t And of the two, air j the more immediately important, sirce one may survive for weeks wlthdut food but only a minute or two without air. Air Is normally taken into the body through the nose and food- through the mouth, and nature g has safe guarded these two portals of entry to the body with many tngeriious de fences. But things will go wrong and then the body labors under disadvantages. How prevalent are defects of the nose and throat has been brought to light by the research division of the Mil bank memorial fund. - - la 100.000 adult, while, native-born males, it was found that in the 20-yeur-old-agc group more than 35 per cent of those examined suffered de lects. With advancing ag the prevalence of both types of defects tended to de cline, those of the nose less rapidly than those of the throafe- The nose septum (partition) is ' formed of cartilage and bone and ' does not alter much wit; age . T!ic tonsils, however, are formed out of so-called lymphoid tissue, a tissue which Is most prevalent In the body at Infancy and youthc Wnd which tends to shrink as theperon grows older. .
