Appleby ' In compliment to Mrs. Prank B. Appleby, who is leaving soon to make her home In Los Angeles, members of the Clio club entertained yester day' afternoon at a no-hostess lunch eon at the Sacajawea Inn. - Covers were placed for 14 at a table set with a lovely centerpiece of sweet peas In pastel shades. Service was at 1 o'clock. . - Three tables of bridge were at play with Mrs. L. IC. Klnzel winning first honors and Mrs. R. P. Murphy ru ceivlng second prize. Mrs. Appleby was presented with a beautiful stiver gift from the club. , Out-of-town guests were Mrs. G. L. Dutton, of Portland, and Mrs. Georgo O. Gilbert, of Montrose, Colo, who has been visiting her daughter, Mrs. R. E. Westenhaver. ' Thursday Bridge Club Entertained Members of the Thursday Bridge club were guests of Mrs. W. H. Boh henkamp Sr. yesterday; at a bridge luncheon. Blue delphinium decorat ed the table at luncheon, which was served at the home of Mrs. M. B. Donohue. Three tables of cards were at play later at the Bohnenkamp home with Mrs. W. S. Harer winning the club prize. The next meeting will be in two weeks. . i Miss Beatty Weds : ' Gilbert Ilettick Of Interest to La Grande friends Is the marriage of Miss Vera Beatty, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Beatty, to Gilbert Hettick, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Hettick, of Williamsburg, Kan., Thursday afternoon at a cere mony performod by the Rev. Arthur B. Pearson,- of the First Presbyterian church at Pendleton, In tne presence of a small group of relatives ann friends. Following the wedding din ner was served at the Pendleton hotel. Mrs. Hettick Is a graduate of tho University of Washington and a mem ber of Beta Phi Mu. 1 Mr. Hettick at tended the University of Kansas and is now with the Ford, garage. After a motor trip to coast points they win make their home In La Grande. -. . Auxiliary Club . ': .Meets Thursday The Stitch and Chatter club of the American Legion auxiliary met for tv delightful afternoon Thursday at Pine Cono when sewing and swimming were diversions. A large attendance was present. Later In the afternoon delicious re freshments were served. The next meeting will be on the second Thurs day In September due to the state convention being held in August. Canton, Auxiliary - Meet Last Night Drill practice for about an hour and a half was held by tho Blue Mountain Canton and auxiliary their meeting last night at La Grande with about 35 members In attendance. Afterwards a short business session took place followed by a social hour and tne serving oi reiresnmenis. The next meeting will be at union. : July 17. Hostess at Party Mrs. Frank Seward was hostess last night at her home to about 20 friends at an evening of pleasant social hours when games and pinochle were en joyed. Mrs. Joe Miller won first honors at cards and Mr. Miller received conso lation prize. Each woman guest was presented with a pretty bouquet of sweet peas before departing. Delicious refreshments were served. Camp Fire Girls Plan Camp at Cove The Natslhi Camp Fire group mot last night at the home of Miss Eliza beth Hesse, when the girls worked on the designing of their symbols. The camp at Covo the last of this month was discussed and another meeting will be held next Thursday evening. This was the meeting that Is held once a month by tho boards. The American Legion met Monday evening at the Wade hall. Members 01 Elgin unit attended this meeting. In 1913 ho wrote an article predicting an Anglo-German war. At the outbreak of the World war ho was commander of the home units ot the fiftieth army corps but at his own request was assigned to a field command.. . He was an early advocate' of the use of asphyxiating gases and' before the end of the war was recognized as one of the premier strategists of the Im perial army, in a dock puDiisnea less, than a decade ago he predicted a war of the future in which gases and airplanes would play major parts.
