It is thrilled by the battle hymns of its fathers. It is filled with tales of chivalry and high adventure which appeal to an appreciation of war's bestial quality, of the physical wretchedness and spintuaj agony entailed in the futile business of organized killing. - - i The war spirit moves in waves. It achieves its peak when the realities of past wars have been softened in popular recol lection,' when a new generation, fresh for adventure and saturated -with the outward color and illusory romance of waris ready for its own "Big Parade." ', .Then, would be an excellent time to revive some of the fine wHi' flcfflrtjjpW WihgTriilflc"Bi the woiidVftcftufcs which present the endless, dog. drudgery of a life in .jujns as its pomp and circumstance, which . dwell on its brutalizing aspects no less than on its occasional episodes of lightness and splendor. v v A : ; ' ' CRITICS OF EDUCATION Criticism of the public schools is regarded by some educa tors as an. attack on education. It is nothing of the sort, of course. - Indeed, it may be a defense of real education. Yet the certainty that he will be assailed as a foe of educa tion has sealed the lips of many a critic of the schools. The school system of the United States isn't perfectas every fair minded and thoughtful person will concede, but it is remarkably good, A school is no better than its teachers, and a vast army of trained and inspired teachers cannot be recruited in the course of a few years. Since the war there has been perceptible improvement in leaching standards, but teaching is one of those things in which room for improve ment is unlimited. One criticism frequently made is-that too much attention has been paid to making education attractive by smoothing the pnth as compared with inducing strenuous voluntary effort.- This is not supported by a comparison of tho present day curriculum with that of a decade or fifteen years ago. It is true that the three R's are no longer taught by the tune t'i me nicKory slick. There is more force behind the point that giving children a smattering of subjects which they should learn thoroughly and then sugar-coating the taste is not education. If this is the process carried on in the schools, so much tho worse for the schools, for they are not discharging their function. The irony of it is that this pseudo education, although it is nearly worthless, actually costs more than the veal thing. The educational system of one period cannot l,e compii-ed with that of a preceding or later time. Memory is not reliable mid, there is no common basis, for comparison.
