Someone estimates it at 24 quadrillion what ever that means. And it wouldn't take a tenth of the time to estimate that there is a very good chance that crippled child ren and poor people will both be extinct five hundred years from now. A ridiculous bequest that can never be carried out. A lost golden opportunity, to do something worthwhile or present generations. ' Three newspaper publishers have been appointed lo dip lomatic posts within the last few weeks by President Hoover. Two of them have held other foreign appointments previously, and one would conclude that at least some newspaper men aro diplomatic, tactful. A president might name a man as minister strictly on a political basis once but if he is sent abroad a second tine to represent this country, it is safe to assume that his early record was rrfost satisfactory. Such is the case with E. E. Brodie, publisher of the Morning Enter prise at Oregon City and former minister to Sinm, who is being sent to Finland by President Hoover. Mr. Brodie spent four years in the Orient and returned with an excellent repu tation in the diplomatic service. Both as a successful busi ness in-wi-W ajtu studeuLof public affairs he is well fitted to represent this country in a foreign capital. There is no doubt of his success but the appointment means a loss to Oregon for several years. He will be greatly missed by his many friends in the newspaper fraternity. THE GREATEST ENGINEER OF ALL Since we live in an age that leans more heavily each year on its engineers, Dean Carl T. Humphrey of the School of Technology at Villanova College decided the other day that it would bo interesting to find out what man competent authorities considered the greatest engineer of all time. The deans of ,uI the engineering schools in the country, accordingly, were asked for their opinions: and they voted that the honor properly belongs to James Watt, who turned tho steam engine fromi a toy into a useful machine. From technical standpoints there may be reasons lo dis agree with this claim: but certainly, considering the thing in the light of the consequences that followed on his work, Watt seems eminently deserving of the honor. We do not always realize the Iremt'ndous revolution in human affairs that followed on the development of the steam engine. Yet it was this invention that was responsible for nearly all of the changes that exist between the civilization of today and the civilization, for instance of 1776. , It was not alone that the steam engine made possible tho railroad train and the steamship, thus obliterating distances and bringing all people into closer communication without: another. The factories that it produced turned society com pletely upside down, and by ushering in an entirely new set of social and economic conditions helped lo change men's ideas of morality, customs, laws and politics in a startling manner. If it had not leen for James Watt and his steam engine, we would still be living under circumstances similar to those of the hitler part of the 18th century. Other engineers may have had great technical skill, may have solved harder prob lems; but none had a greater effect on the life of the world. And that, after all, is not such a bad lest. WHAT?
