In the De Soto Sir, the rnnlr.ff board problem has bn solved by detrisinff an unusual design of steel board. It haa the requisite long wearing qualities and is neat and trim in appearance. It is only a boat half the weight of ordinary types of metal running-boards, and yet it is exceptionally strong, ow ing to its unique design and process of manufacture. The essential featnre of the I Ho to running-board is a series of deep ribs, formed In the metal. Tha board proper Li made of a single sheet of steel. A special machine designed by Chrylr en gineers fomn these ribs in the sheet of. steel, doubling the metal together at the proper intervals as deftly as a tailor accordian-pleats a piece of cloth. These fold, or ribs, give the boards a roightr strength. They extend downward at right angles to the top surface, formintr unusually rigid construc tion. The boards so built are per manently flat, and will not spring or bend in uw. A flat sheet of steel, cut to the proper shape, and large enough to allow for the channeling operation. Is fed Into the special machine. A series of rollers take hold of the sheet, passing it along. The first net Imprints shallow grooves in the i plate, the nest set deepens the j grooves,-and so on until the last j net of rollers presses the channels tightly together into the perman- ! ent reinforcing ribs that give the board its strength. It is then trim med and punched and the end welded on, ready for attaching the rubber mat that covers the top surface. It takes eight other machines. In addition to this special rolling machine, to prepare the board for the rubber top. Beginning as a largn sheet of steel, as ft comes GARAGE GOSSIP Btt-ittTSB Trij M. A.
