; THINGS THAT NEVER HAPPEN
Gene Tunney says the pugilist requires the greatest self
restraint to keep from fighting the contest in imagination
for hours before he enters the ring. Imagination is one of
humanity's richest gifts, but an overworked imagination may
prove a curse. Worry is the operation of an imagination
gone wrung. To prove how futile is most of our worrying
it is necessary only to remember how iuVny things we
worried about never happened. Most people with sick im
aginations are carrying not only their personal worries but
a lot of um'vt'i'Mit fcarg 't-rmffeycrMiected with their -own
interests and welfare. They worry about the end of the
world; the possibility of another world war; the depravity
of the times; the failure of the forests; the menace of com
munism; race suicide, or the danger of overpopulation of Uie
world. And unfortunately, the people who do the most wor
rying about these possible but remote evils, have the least .
capacity for solving their own inunediate problems. How
good it would be for all of us if we could grasp the meaning
of that old saying, "Sufficient unto the day is the evil there
of." We need very little philosophy to take care of the
simple business of living. Those are wisest who refuse to
fight until' they get into the ring and hear the bell.

A NEGLECTED DEPARTMENT
The United States patent office is the stepchild of con- j
gress, and symbolical of its rags and hunger are the 103,236 '
patent applications now awaiting registration or rejection. !
Not in many years hits congress produced a single man !
with the courage and foresight and understanding to sense ;
the importance to the nation-at-largo of expeditious handling '
of patent applications and to fight in congress for appropria- (
lions equal to the needs of the patent office. !
Congressional indifference to the patent office is largely !
due to a misunderstanding of the purpose of the office. That
purpose is public, not private. The government promises a ,
certain protection to the inventor to induce him to make j
further national progress by putting his inventions into gen-j
era! use. j
A patent system was considered sufficiently important to'
le provided for in the constitution. George Washington j
was the first commissioner of patents. Abraham Lincoln. '
who had sit least one patent in his name, classed the creation
of the patent office as an event so important thst it deserved
rank with the discovery of America and the invention of j
printing. And yet congress is habitually niggardly in its j
appropriations to this vital institution. j
