It is hard to realize the extent to which the remote places
.of the earth are coming under the influence of modern civili
sation until you read that the lost Canadian airmen, missing
for weeks on a lonely island within the Arctic Circle, were
found because an Kskimo, listening in on his radio, heard that
(they were missing sumewhere in his vicinity, and went out
lo hunt for them.

P find life running its placid course much as it used to in
,pivhistorie times, an Kskimo's igloo in the far north would
jbe the first. Vet, if these eaily reports are correct, the radio
set most characteristic of all features of our modern life-
has gone to the noi thlaiui, and the slant-eyed denizen of the
land of eternal snows is rapidly imbibing at least the surface
development:: of the unknown lands to the south of him.
Whether we like it or not, that is the way things are going.
The remote places are not so remote, now. Go to darkest
Africa ami you are apt to stumble over a flivver. Fly to the
South Sea islands and you will find the movies there ahead
tf you. Gu to the Arctic and you find radio sets. There is
no escaping from our factory civilization.
. Perhaps this helps to explain our increasing attitude of
confidence and assurance. There are not many mysteries
left for us. The man who lived a hundred years ago knew
that niest of the earth's surface was still little-know n, exist
ing after tlio maimer of its forgotten ancestors; and the
knowledge impressed upon him the fact that the earth was
full of surprises. But the surprises, now, are gone.
What use to seek knowledge far afield, when you will find '
the same things there you are used to ut home?
