valley were greatly shocked yester
day when it became known that
Airs. J. JJ. Smith had passed away
the night before at about 0:30
o'clock at her home In the Valeria
district. Her death followed a loitg
illness, covering at least the past
three years, year when life held
Utile for her and when recovery
was not at alt to be considered.
Another stroke sustulned lust week
hastened her going.
Mrs. Smith was one of the best
known and most highly respected
women in the valley. She loved
life, her friends say, and she made
much of it. She was a good neigh
bor and a good friend. Mr. Smith,
who preceded his wife in death
Heveral years, was one of tne early
pioneers In this valley, lie came

Smith, previous to her marriage,

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Perry of Island
City have started on a long jour
ney back to their old home in West
Virginia. They will visit especially
at Madison and Ha Id Knob and
at other places where they have
friends and relatives. Mr. and
Mrs. Perry have not been back lo j
their old home for about 3:! years
and during (hose years have been
residents of Island City save for a
time when they lived In Wallowa
county. They planned, when they
left, to be gone from the valley for
about two months.

The Cove Ladies' Aid society
will 'be guests next Wednesday of
Mrs. George McDanlel. There aru
a number of special features for

time Is anticipated.

Summervillc. started Tuesday eve
ning for her old home at Indinnol
Iowa, having been called by the
sudden death of her father, L. K.
Miatt. Mr. Mlall had been with a
son in South Hend. Indiana, for
several months and had returned
to Ids Moines only on Sunday. Mis
death came with no warning. Mr.
Miatt had many friends in this
valley, made during his visits here
at his daughter's home. He liked
this country and always made ex-'
tended visits here, taking a grout
interest in everything he saw. He
was one of the most prominent

Hugh Mulse and family are now
living. The residence has Just

story home of the bungalow type,
and has been completely stuc

has been re-arranged and is now
commodious, well arranged, wetl .

buildings are also being remodeled

Methodist Ladies' Aid societies was
held yesterday all day at the Alicel
church, with the members of that

it, was from every point of view!

The weather was ideal and no
wind, and that all helped. There
