Unlike the human killer he didn't know that he was committing it crime or that ho was being ' punished. Loss of several lives in a Seattle hotel fire follows too ' closely on the observation of Fire Prevention Week through out the country. Carelessness was responsible for most fires. No one can be too particular about the elimination of fire hazards. Never before in the history of Lti Grande have so many ; people been brought into places of business as during the Alerchnnts' Pirate Party. Participants have seen the Variety I and excellence of stocks In various sloi-es, with whlclr mluiy ; of them were unfamiliar. The event is serving to convince ' Union mid Wallowa county people anew of the superior advantages of shopping in La Grande stores. WE STILL NKRft KtOLKilON The new "humanist church," established In New York the ! other day by a group of advanced thinkers, seems to be a radical affair, lo say the least.' Its sponsors announce that prayer will have no place in its service, There will be no talk of "sin", "redemption" or "salvation"; these notions, say the doughty hunytnists, are out of date. Most of us, no doubt, will simply conclude that this place is not a church at all, no matter what it is called; and the added conclusion that humanism, whatever else it may be, is not a religion, follows inescapably. Of course, if there are people to whom this kind of "worship" appeals, they are at liberty to engage in it; but they must be differently constituted from most of us. For it is precisely in this matter of prayer, sin and salva tion that the average man feels the need of religion the most. If we were all perfectly sure of ourselves; if we were all tpiile certain that we understood this world, the next one end our place in both so well that there were no longer any mystery about it; if we all felt that we would know exactly What to do, anil would bo strong enough to do it, no matter what puzzling situation life might throw in otir paths; if we all were able lo look back on our past lives ahd feel that we had made proper expiation for all the misdeeds we might find there ' Then, in that case, this humanist church nvight suffice for all of us. I til t we haven't reached that situation yet. We are pitifully unsure of our selves, tragically in doubt about the mystery of life, pathetically conscious that we have not rtoned for many of our errors. So it is that we need something more meaty in the way of a religion than the humanists offer. We need prayer, we need redemption, we need salvation; and no church that fails to offer them will ever attract the majority of modern people. window ami an oiiliet on the op posite wall near the cellini,', or in llle cellhifT. which leads lo a root vi'iillliitoi'.
