With college football competition making its debut in La
(Irande this week there should be no difficulty getting a big
attendance at Friday's game when the Normid plays the
College of Idaho. The local institution needs financial sup

In this day when most people seem much more inclined to
discuss the merits or demerits of prohibition than to take
;itny real action aboul it, it is highly refreshing to read the
remarks of iMaj.-Cen. Smedley Duller, of the U. S. Marines.
! Ceneral liutler's most recent outburst, as you doubtless
recall, came at Quantieo, Va., where he cohiniands the marine
base. In the village of Qimntieo there, was Considerable
! bootlegging, with marines as steady patrons. One marine,
; indeed, was found to be spending his off-hours as bar-tender
. in one speakeasy.
Learning of this, Ceneral Duller jugged the offending
marine, and announced that no marines would be allowed to
' visit Qunntico until the .situation had been cleaned up. Then,
assembling his marines before him, he made this speech:
"Vim birds took an oath some time ago to defend the con
: stitulion. Don't let the news stun you, but the prohibition
; law Is a part of it. I understand that there Is some differ
;ence of opinion among civilians concerning the right and
,' wrong of prohibition. .Some of it got into camp, but those

to mo military, so as long as you wear those Uniforms, don't
' get opinionated."
It might be added that the marines and the village author
ities at Oiianlico took the general's words to heiirl . and
Qunntico is dry once more.
We say that Ceneral Duller's words are "refreshing" be
cause they are so obviously straight from the shoulder and
sensible. They might well be addressed to certain civilian
oi i ice iioitiers as won as 10 marines, iMany and many a
mayor, chief of police and congressman might well be told,
"don't let the news stun you, but the prohibition law is part
of the constitution."
