Mystery Story
Good Screen
Entertainment
Ail lovers of mystery drama.,
should hail with delight "The Don
ovan Affair, the Columbia I no per
cent dialogue production which op- ,
ens today at the Arcade theatre..
Without doubt this Is one of the
finest detective stories and talking
pictures that has reached the
screen.
The Owen Davis stage play by
the same name was n success, and
the screen version leaves nothing
to be desired. The mystery sur
rounding tlto strange- killing of
Jack Donovan at a dinner table
and the later death of another
character in the same manner nd
by the same mean's a carving'
knife is profound. The false clues
are many. The apparently contra
dictory acting of the various people
in the play confuses the mind un
til the denouement, which comes
subtly and is wholly logical as well
as surprising.
The emir; cast Is above the av
erage, Jack Holt excelling hlmseii
as the sleuth. Dorothy Uevlor, j
William Collier Jr.. John Roche.,
Fred K'elsey. Agnes Ayres, Wheler
la k man. Vir ginia lirown Fnirc
and Klhel Wales complete a super-
tative cast. Frank fapra's direction i
is flawless, proving again the skill .
of this young director who handled
the Columbia hit "Submarine." j

Yet Irvln Wlllat. the director, ha
built up the story, an adaptation of
Max It rand's famous novel, "The
Black Rider," so skillfully that not
a single episode seems Impossible
Or unlikely in view of what has
gone before,
"The Cavallor"'pirtures the ex

death defying, of that friend of

uniting in marriage his son, Carlos,
and beautiful Lucia D' Arquista,
whose impoverished family have
sent her all the way from Spain
to the New Work! ns the sacrifice
which will restore their wealth and
position, by means of Ramon's pur
chase price. Near the close of that
long journey she meets Kl Cabal
lero, and their pnsslon and detet
minntion that Lucia shall never be
