Matt. li:lti, 3 0, 17. : The Great Sorrow Of A Little Hoy I Times have changed. The last two weeks of vacation was a sad period a 'generation ago. The shadow of the school house .darkened each day. Now we actually know boys who look forward to the opening of school. ) The Graf Zeppelin's 'round-the-world cruise seems assured n successful ending. From Los Angeles to Lakehtirst is the easiest hop. This morning the Graf completed the most difficult and did it grandly. The first non-stop flight from Japan to the United States has been realized. He fore long they will bo commonplace, but the German bag and her competent commander will go down in history as the trail blazers for practical trans-ocean travel. Yesterday we observed a father load his car full of boys and drive away. Two of the boys were his own, and there were two or three boys from the neighborhood. Swimming suits were much in evidence and we think it safe to assume that some cool pool was their destination. What a Cine thing for jfaUiorsto take their sons swimming, to, bq. com panions wirfi them, to take time to play with them! Not all fathers have time to be with their hoys as much as they would like. Not all take the time that they should. FVrhaps those who do try to provide fatherly and friendly compan ionship for their sons remember what it meant to have their own fathers do likewise. Or perhaps, having been denied a father's companionship and understanding when they were boys, these lathers aie determined that their sons will fare bettor. Certainly the father who tries to be a boy with his son will be closer to him, be able to understand him .better and aid him more than he could otherwise. When a father and sou are friends, good companions and frequent playmates, wc are not inclined to fear for the boy's future. More swimming parties made up by fathers and sons would make a good investment for numerous families. INADKQUATK COM.KGKS More than 1,000,000 students will be enrolled in the cullcges and universities of (lie United Slates this fall, as compared with fift.OOO in I'jijilaiid, "ki.OOO in France and l'J"l,ono in Germany. Taking into consideration differences in popula tion, it is apparent that a far greater proportion uf Americans seek higher education, education or college life ing arc oveierowdcd and new ones need not wait long to i complete their enrollment. j 11 all students were sincere in their efforts education the situation probably could be clarified ing facilities if put to full use undoubtedly would Mill a far greater number of r.tudents than ere enrolled cr The "wasters," those who attend college for puip idle pleasure, however, utilize as much or even nunc labora tory and miscellaneous scholastic equipment and demand more professional attention than those to whom acquisition of knowledge is a consuming passion. Colleges and universities, however, are not complaining cicnt method of making higher education accessible 1o every serious-minded student and moie inaccessible for I hose w ho. if they study at all, study merely to "pas ;." Colleges and universities, however, aie no complaininc and deficits, once the constant wotty of tho.e in: t have been wiped out by larger enioili;ieuts at lai v.er I nil urns Schools no longer send their faculty tuomk i; ,..tudent hunt ing" during the summer recess. Ine student surplus and prosperity id the school.. to keep out both the "waster" and studious. The ic high tuitions bar the pom but studious, and the wi,!, demand for college training pounds the sc hools to pie hrr.uiKo one small hoy twitted another Jihout having a h eetlieart, wht'n the truth was he didn't have one ami hi didn't want one, the I'liMt llltk hoy In dead, There wan a rifle loaded ami ready to hand, and the hoy who was heiiitf twitted pointed It at hi friend, Junt to IVIwhirn him. And there was a tailH-r minor wrt of report, such us a Huulrrel rifle makes when you Hhont at a H'liiiriel and the first Hi tie hoy laid down to sleep from which In couldn't ever be wakened. And then ranui tears, and heart ache ,a story sobbed out to the Kiowri-iipn, Couldn't they iinder .slnud that he never meant to do it? .lust couldn't they understand? A little boy in blue overalls, tear fully huddled down In a hij; chair. Surely one's pity koch out to till of th. in ,to the folks of the two little boys- a ml to t lie hoy who can't Htop crying. Out .you cannot say "Tin-re! there" to any nf them. There aren't any words for it. You see a. small boy brooding un der tlie. apple trees of home, or Htubblntf his feet thouKhlfully, sad ly, a long- tlie pavement, and you think to yourself, 'lb; doesn't know how fortunnto he is to b a hoy, and to find pleasure In boyish sim plicities. He is sad now. Hut It will pass like a cloud, lie Is only Kiiev ItiK for some minor sorrow or hurt. It. will pass." And, of course, In all likelihood, It will pass as the clouds do, lint can't you comprehend how cruelly it must hurt before ever It Is KoneV Can't you realize that klm;s have seen their IcinKdoms (otter about, litem anil ko down to fiainim,' ruin, with never a heart- i ache such as his? That KomoO , never KhOicd so deeply or with such ; woeful spirit? That men have lost fortune and himhI name . without that anguish which Is momentar ily his? l-'or a boy hasn't any phil osophy to sustain hliu, and he hasn't inured to the mischances of this world, and, when all's said and done. It was but yesterday that he put on tho Kuruicnts of boyhood. '1 here Is something In him that ur ges him to be manly anil brave, but he doesn't ipiite know how. A ud there Is il whisper In him that tells the boy It Mould he best to give way to tears, And this Is hateful. The spirit of the boy is under the lush and sometimes tho lash leaves a scar. We are always forgetting, more or less, that nnrc we were chil dren. And it Is so truly important tliiit we should remember. How otherwise may we reach deep down into childllsh hearts, finding the sorrows and hurts that are hid den there, and somehow contrive to heiil litem? Tlie children say to themselves, often enough, that we do not care, l-'or If we en red, q would undet'tiland. And we do rare, but will not understand, because In our ways we are more wilful, than cliMdVeii; AVIien yo'ii sea a hoy wafl;- lug with head bent, and rebellion or sorrow In his eyes, there wal';t so sure as you were born the true rPilome of tragedy.
