Following the dedication of the
Eastern Oregon Normal school in
La Grande this afternoon, the first
torml Is to begin hero June 17 with
tho summer session, coninting; of
two six-week periods. Thin will
mark the opening of the first state
institution of higher education in
the entire eastern half of the state.
Ihe fall quarter classes begin on
Kept. 24 following registration on
Kept. 2Z, and the winter and spring
H Darters start Jan. 2, IK 30 and
Jlar. 24, 1!30.

This $175,000 wins appropriated j
ruary, 1927 with an additional $40.
000 for maintenance. IJowever,
because of the condition of the
state finances, construction did not
begin until Friday, Aug. 10, 192$
when soil was first broken on the
normal school site. The $175,000
appropriation was kept Intact for ;
use but tho $40,000 for maintenance
"went by the boards" because It i
was unused during the 1927-28 bi-;
ennium. i
During the legislative session this
year, however, approximately $85,
000 was provided for maintenance
during this and next year, to be
used for salaries, etc. The govern- :
or Included the sum in his budget
and there was little difficulty In
securing its passage, which opened
the way for the first classes In the
new building a week from next
Monday.

Tho Eastern Oregon Normal
school was voted by the people of
the state at the general election In
the full of l!2t, and during the
closing weeks of that year, follow
ing a visit of state officials menv
bers of the Oregon Normal School
board of regents and the board of
control the city of La Ornude was
selected as the site of tho Institu
tion of higher learning.
Immediately, the city surveyed
the possible locations for such a'
school and. on April 22 when the
r.egents visited Lu tlrande, had sev
eral likely sites In mind. On April
30. 1927 the site east of the court
bouse on the hill overlooking Con
nordalo was formally decided on
and machinery was set Into action
preliminary to letting contracts for
construction.
Work Started! list August

unit were opened on July 28, 1U28
and the contract was awarded to
the Northwest Construction com
pany of MMlford. After the soil
was broken Aug. 10 the construc
tion progressed us rapidly as the
weather would permit and the
buliding work went on continuous
ly until completion, with the ex
ception of a few weeks during the
winter when weather necessitated a
bait. The Impressive stairway lead
ing up to the campus level from
Ninth street has not yet been com
pleted but is to be ready for the
opening of the fall quarter.
Careful study was given to the
orientation of buildings, landscap
log and approaches to the grounds
in the planning oi the campus. Pro
visions are being made for a base
ball and football field and a stad
iu in to seat approximately 5000
people, these to be erected later. A
lake for aquatic sports will be pro
vided lis well as an outdoor thea
ter, accord in it to present plans.
The main entrance to the mall is
on the axiH of K avenue, white the
grand staircase leading to the ad
ministration building w ill terminate
the vista of Ninth street.
Although only the administration
building is now a reality, the group
of school buildings, when eventual
ly completed, will follow the crest
of the hill with n wide mall separ
ating the administration building
from the library, training school,
dormitories, auditorium, gymnas
ium and others. ; The apparently
isolated parts of construction now
built are but the links of the fin
ished scheme one of the finest
settings for a group of educational
buildings in the state, according to

ing to a large gymnasium, Is plan
ned on the fust era edge ot the hill
southeast of the practice school.
