These totais comprise only thoBe firms that are classified b manufaclurcrs and do not include the payroll or number of employes in the railroad shops and in the normal busi ness activities of the city or the state high way shops which have it substantial pay roll. With these included the industrial pay roll of the La Grande territory would show a Total in excess of $5,000,000 according to conservative estimates. . The products produced by these Union county factories in the making of which two and a quarter million' dollars are spent for iaixji', range all the way from lumber to cig ars. Reports show that markets for these products extend throughout the United States and into foreign countries. Slost of them will be on display in booths at the Home Products show when a concentrated effort to impress the community with tho value and importance of Union county manu facturing plants and of the desirability of home products will be made. - Among the institutions employing a large number of men and having a big payroll are ihe Jit. Emily Lumber company and the ilowman-l licks Lumber company with a to la! payroll of a million and three-quarter ; dollars and alwut 1200 men employed. The Grande Hondo Meat company employs Z't men and has a payroll of over $70,000 a year-, and the Hasten Orego'jr. Light and ,1'owe; company has about the same number. of men., in this territory. The flour mills, located t Island City, La Grande, Union nd Elgin, em' ploy 30 men and have a payroll of $60,750.. md the Evening Olmervei is next with 20 on tho payroll, which totals over ?5fs,000 a year. The Ia (iiande Ifeikery employs 18 and has a $:55,000 payroll and Ute Blue Mountain cream cry with 12 employed has a payroll of $24, 000. Other substantial institutions inckido the Lu Grande Iron works, the Union cream ery, Andrews brothers' tailoring shop, San ford's candy kitchen, Gwiiliams Kiectnc Bakery mid the job printing plan Is. . The imtKittsttice of this two and n uar ler million dollar factory payroll attd its ef fect on the general community prosperity is given emphasis by facts that show practical ly ail of ibis money spent in the La. Grande territoiy each year and all of the people em ployed residing here. . . ; - - . ' '- - - - Those who have studied the manufactur ing situation and the need for more payrolls . point out that a growth of 10 percent in fac tories already established here would result in added payrolls of nearly a quarter of a million dollars a year. The Home Products show is designed to emphasize this possibil ity to Uie people throughout Union county and is a beginning of a campaign to acfjuaint all local citizens of the community with ttm quality and value of Union county made products.
