COLD RETARDING
' GRAIN AND GRASS
Condition of Winter
Above Nprmal, However.

Continued pold backward weather
A 1h retarding the growth of all grain
and grasses In this community to
j a- considerable extent. During
much of the past week frequent
snow (lurries accompanied by cold
winds have tonded to make alt
classes of outside work qulto dis
agreeable.: The soil In moat of the
i fields has' become sufficiently dry
to allow working them at this time
j. and much of the spring seeding has
f been finished recently. Homo
X farmers say they could have seed
j1; ed earlier but were afraid to tHke
the chanco on doing no beeuuHo of
u damaging freeze which might
ft. come later In the seaHon after the
fit grain had become Blurted. At a
h number of times In past years
-S niuh damage haa resulted to crops
of Federation wheat from hard
freezes in late May und uurly Juno.
The alfalfa crops on the Irrigated
lands along the valley are much
behind what they usually are ut
.v this season of the year. The cold
w weather has prevented alfulfa
-J making any start to epeuk of un
til recently. The sumo condition
also prevails In regurd to the
it growth :of domestic granites which
are Used for pasture purposes on
the Irrigated farms, while much
'. of the pasture Is being used ut this
' time it is not large enough to pro
vide veoy good forage.
. . The 'condition of the winter
j wheat rops appears to be above
' normal;, in nearly all parts of tho
county. f According to reports from
i farmer the grain camo through
t the winter with good stands gonor-
ally and the cool weather of the
ij past few weeks appeurs to have
been very beneficial in causing tho
grain to stool out well . Hovorul
?j farmers In this community huve
i been busy the puHt week harrow
Ing the wheat fields. This man
r ner of cultivation is bullovnd by
many to be a considerable help lit
or m ing a mulch on top of the
ground and aid In holding moisture
later In the Meaaon. Homo garden
making has been going on at many
'. of the farms during the past few
t days, with the plantings being con
,' lined to early truck which la not
easily killed by the front, A num
ber of the farmers In the dry farm-
Ing sections have started the'plow-:-
