There has been a greatly increased pride in property throughout the city and an abundance of city water the last two seasons has encou raged home owners to cultivate and enjoy the advantages of flowers and shrul bery. It has not only made a more attractive city but has added to property values and has increased individual appre ciation for tho beautiful in nature. Attention to trees is an especially worthy activity since La Grande Is most lacking in tliat background for natural beauty. In a land where timbered wealth and forest beauty is the most noted characteristic, it is particularly unfortun-' ate that the growing of trees in home yards has not had more attention, that those which we already possess have been given so little expert attention. Contrary to the old imprcsslun locally, tree authorities say there is nothing in the climate or wind velocity of this valley to prevent the successful home cultivation of beautiful shade trees of almost all common varieties.
