Mis statement that farm relief involves a number uf. problems because farming includes a number of widely different industries deserves re-emphasis. No rolief can be possible through abrupt legislation, or us a result of one spe cific net. Transportation, marketing, production, tariff protection, etc., all enter into the situation. His advice is sound and we have hew! confidence in his ability to work a gradual and economic improvement in farm prosperity. THE CIRCLK OF PROSPERITY In a section promoting Oregon-made products yesterday's Oregoninn carried an interview with Theadore Schommer, president Of the Oregon ."Manufacturers association, in which the sound economic advantage, of home buying was well ill ustrated. Speaking of the "circle of prosperity" occasioned by a buying preference for home manufactured products, .... ...... , .... " no, saw: ..... . "The circle. of prosperity mny be defined like this: T.usy stores, make busy factories, which make ; steudy work mid- pay, which make busy stores,' and vnus me circle is complete. t- "Wholosnlo and retail merchantsfactories and ' ""tortfidjAitin-iTnKto and property owners every PortTander has a place in this circle of.'prqspei ity. and un intimate concern in seeing that it is continuous and unbroken. "Who breaks the circle of prosperity? He is the man who', while" milking his living here, buys his producbi elsewhere. . . .. . ...(; ; "Ho docs not do this because ho wants to Injure -'i his cfty jftnd; its industries, its business men and working folk; ho does it because he does not think, or because Ive believes that products made else where, merely because they have perhaps been made for a longer time and are better known, have virtues this city's products do not possess. , ; "So he breaks the circle, , and the benefits that might Imve been kept for h is fellow citizens and himself flow out to other communities. "How shall we keep the circle of prosperity in tact? All things being equal, buy Portland products and give Portland producers the opportunity to prove that their -products are equal to those you , have been buying. Compare qualities. Compare prices. Compare evidence, remembering the time . you save in seem ing deliveries and the money you ; save by having large stocks of merchandise close at hand. Husiness men promote the well-being of your city and yourselves by encouraging your employes . and your families to join hands with you in the -circle of prosperity." ' , . La Grande's, situation is exactly the same. The family that buys outside bread or pastry, outside potatoes or fruit, outside packing products' or flour, outside pickles or candy or cereal or anything else that family is breaking the circle of prosperity, unnecessarily sending into outside channels part of the money that could be retained and util ized within our own community. Every resident of the community is a part of the circle, has a responsibility in keeping it intact. ''Olt-HALI-: HOOVKIC vaenum elenn-r. flood working- romll Itlon. Prke $21).
