Htuiuluril ex- PROTECTING EASTERN OREGON'S STOCK INDUSTRY It is only natural thut the people of Union county and Eastern Oregon should regard the appropriation bill for , the Stock Show, annual event at Union for twenty years, from a selfish standpoint. Tho reason, however, is that the peoplo of. this area know more about the stock show and its tre mendously valuable influence on the stock industry through out Eastern Oregon, and because they are convinced that leg islative aid will be a means of promoting one of the biggest industries in the state. Columns of space could be occupied telling of the direct benefits of the stock show, of specific influences that have lneiwisfiH Htork raisinc. ruixprl mirnhrerl nnimnlo In a new high level, nwde possible greater profits and a more' stable ihlh- .Th "" p th0 1,.5 mdiu luuouiu ill una vab uuniiuiy bu wen tiuupieu w iivcoa ui to medium ' $H. 76 to $7.60; ,-veol-el'S, milk-fed, good -to choice, I3.00ib' M. 60; do medium ll.MU 13.00; do cull to common 8.60(1) 11.6".,. , f ' ' ' Hogs: Ktcndy, receipts 106, t(h heuvy weight (260. to 360 'lbs.) medium to choice 18.76 to to. 60; medium weight (20O-2&O lbs.) me dium to cholre . 764 10.60; light weight (IG0-200 lbs.) medium to choice 10.60f 10.76; light lights. The luigur slues by the competition at the stock show during the last ' twenty ure not " ii-""""i r holding Without a state appropriation to provide attractive pre miums, the stock show cannot continue. The last two years, when no state money was available, the chow was staged with the aid of a surplus previously accumulated from out sido sources. No surplus remains and the fate of the show is in the hands of the legislature and the governor. There is no slock show h tho state of Oregon outside of ilie Pacific International except the Eastern Oregon show at Union. And although the Pacific Intemationol.' is the biggest) thing of its kind in the west, its very bigness which attracts Ileitis from the entire country makes it of little value to the average stock grower in Oregon and makes it futile for him to attempt competition. The show at Union is a stockman's show, with direct benefit and encouragement for the men who ship hundreds of carloads of sheep, cattle, hogs and horses into the Portland market and back cast. Aside from this important benefit to the men engaged in stock raising in Eastern Oregon, tho legislative appropria tion could bo justified alone by the lmys' and girls' club work made possible by the show at Union each June. No one ques tions the vital importance of club work in promoting the citi zenship and prosperity of our agricultural districts in the future and the Eastern Oregon slock show is the only event for boys' and girls' club competition in tho counties of this section. . According to sUite ito.uiremciits, here they must enter and compete and eliminate before they can enter com petition nt the state fair or Pacific International where final credits are given. Without the show at Union tho benefits of boys and jtirU' club work in Eastern Oregon would be in jeopardy. The Eastern Oregon show deserves the $.-)00() appropiia-J tion called for in Mr. Weatherspoon's bill.
