The state of Idaho may be anvthlnir but It's far from be- Ing, back ward. At east it's not .backward In wanting. some thing that belongs' :to"Komebody else and" hot backward .in iisking, for'ity The' stiip' of Malheur county running south from Ontario -to the Nevada -line offers a very -ideal means (ii the eyfes of Idaho Ixiosteis) to' secure n shorter and bet ter route by highway from Southern Idalio to San Francisco and 'California markets. Since the needed territory is. now in Oregon and Oiegon hasn't built that wanted highway for Idaho, our neighbors on the east propose to annex the re- quirea land and build the highway themselves. , A very pro pitious men. a scneme lor bringing Idaho closer to the coast that is worthy of much praise from Idaho's standpoint. But wo are reluctant to say, it doesn't seem likely that realization is possible for a little while., Oregon, for some reason or other is a bit jealous of the territory within its boundaries. True, not all of it is valuable. Some of it is quite the oppo site, as n matter of fact, and even the most optimistic op timists can hardly anticipate. utilising sonio of the barren territory to be found around the state. Wo suppose it likely that most of this country desired by Idaho doesn't nroduce very much in taxes; it probably isn't over-populated. Con sidered from a good many angles, there's quite a portion of itiaineur county (not to mention numerous other counties) thnt might well be given buck to the Indians and result in everyone congratulating themselves on a good riddance of baa rubbish. Give it to the Indians, give it to the magpies, give it to the coyotes give it to anybody, but to Idaho never! Wo wouldn't have the people of Idaho think for n minute, 01 coume, that we are stingy or tight or anything me iiini. we woman t want them to feel that we are in- liuencea to n negative decision just to thwart n pert project and a pet highway of their lending to the outside world. No, mat s not tne case, it s a matter or sentiment, we suppose. And sentiment must be sej-ved. Like a freckle-faced, red headed, bow-legged boy, he may lie nothing to look at and good for alwut the same amount but we love him just the ame. Who knows but that he will grow up to lx un all. American football star or president of something? Who knows but what that particular section of Malheur county may be resting on a field of gold, or may Income the future oil producing center of the world, or something equally im possible? No, Idaho, we can't think of it but we thank you for the compliment just the same. Be patient and may be Oregon will build your highway for you some of these flays, you never ran tell. Stranger things have happened. Hut we like our Oregon, every corner of it, good, bad, or in different. And we're going to keep it. ml-': .Mi's.
