MOTORING NEWS mm ranite itmw (bewtwt I auto section VOLUME XVII LA GRANDE, OREGON, SATURDAY, JANUARY 5, NUMBER 88 i i" 7 GAIN OF MILLION CARS LAST YEAR Startling Increase in Pro duction in America; No Letup Is Seen WASHINGTON (Al AlmoHt 1,000,000 more automobiles wcrtv produced in the UnlU'd States In 1928 than In 1927. This startling Increase In produc tion Is base, on the report for the first 11 months of the year and an estimate for Decombur exact f.K ures for which aro nut yet avail able. Manufacturers forecast an even Iarjjer increawt for 1929 because of added rood mileage contemplated and the increasing demand for automobiles abroad. The production figures for each month in 1328 follow.-): January, 331,728 February, 323,798 March. 413.796: April, 410,104; May. 425. 783; June, 396,70; July. 392,076; August, 461,298; September, 416,. 286; October, 397,096; and Novem ber. 256,936. The figures for De cember, still unavailable, are al most certain to exceed the 1927 mark for the twelfth month of 133,671 automobiles, exnerta say. -Although many factories were preparing for nrodurtion of new models and slowed production of their 1928 designs, more motor vehicles were shinned from facto ries fn the United States in Novem ber than in the same month of 1927. Iteports made to the department of commerce show that 256.926 mo tor vehicles, of which 217,256 were passenger cars and 39,680 were . trucks, were produced in Novem ber. These figures compare favor ably with 134,370 vehicle pro duced In the same month 'of 1927. Approximately 4,30o.OttO automo biles ivore produced in 1928 while 3.41,326 were shipped from their factories In 1927. The 3928 produc tion figures may pass the 4,400,000 mark' when all reports have bee" . made, . Scientists Studying to Learn Why Motor Misses on Getaway By William K. Berciitokl .Associated lress Automobile Editor) WASHINGTON A1) Fuel and motor experts of the bureau of standards are seeking an answer to the motorist's question: "why does my engine miss sometimes when 1 step down on the accelera tor." There Is a deep-seated scientific problem behind the rather simple query which is a commoner one than the Individual motorist real ises, the experts any. Is the fuel to be blamed, or is it the engine, or the carburetor which mixes the fuel and air for the en glue? How can the fault le elim inated? These are the elementary questions to which the bureau of standards, in cooperation with the j automotive and petroleum indus try, jh seeKing tne answer. Karly experiments to solve the problem, Indicates a general rela tionship between the character of the fuel and the acceleration per formance obtained with it. The tests huve shown that of two fuels, the one which gives better acceler ation under conditions of winter operation may be poorer than the other under summer conditions. It also has been teamed that while an engine will accelerate about as well with cold jacket wa ter us with hot, heating the Intake manifold greatly improves acceler ation. The acceleration obtained with mixtures both leaner and richer than those normally em ployed has been accurately meas ured to determine the advisability AUTO EXPORTS ; TO BRAZIL ON THE INCREASE -WASHINGTON fAP) Urazll is America's fourth beat customer for motor vehicles. The totul number of assembled curs and trucks exported to lirH7.ll lust year, .according Wj department ot commerce reports, was 25,121), un Increase of 11 per cent over the previous year. - Argentina is the only Luitn Amerlcan country which buys more American motor vehicles than Brazil. The registration of motor t vehicles In Ifruxtl nhmved more than 95,000 automobiles, 40,000 trucks and 1,000 b umbos in opera tion. During the last five years there ' has been a phenomenal growth in demand for trucks lu HrnvM. The truck demand increased from be low 200 In 1923 to more than 11, 00 last year. The present demand, according to department of commerce field exiiet'ts, is for vehicles of light weight and low cost. Luck of ade quate roads Is the principal reason for the few heavy and more expen sive vehicles. Ohio Divorces js,w COLUMBUS, Ohio (Ai In Ohio 15,000 divorces were granted last year, uiid 10,000 children taken front home and placed fn child care agencies, iiclle G reeve, state public welfare official, sees a con nection between the two sets of statistics. of their use for general purposes. The bureau of standards investi gation will continue the study of the relation between fuel and ac celeration performance and wilt test the effectiveness of carburetor auxiliary devices designed to give nearly as good acceleration per formance" with low grade of fuel as can be obtained with a high test gasoline. The tests also have shown that while a high test gasoline is valu able to aid in starting the engine In cold weather, it is of little added value during extremely warm ! weather. The ultimate object of the coop erative investigation is to Ueter- mine what volatility of motor fuel is most economical from the stand point of starting, operating and ac celeration performance in an effort to conserve American petroleum resources. , ' The bureau of standards must determine, as a part of its govern mental functions, the volatility of gasolines sold to the public. Whether those gasollnea should have a higher volatility or a lower volatility must be redetermined as new scientific Investigations show the wa for greater efficiency with lower grade gasolines. .. Both the petroleum and automo tive Industries are watching the bureau of standards investigation closely with the hopes that some device or method may be worked out to use lower grade gasoline with greater efficiency in acceleration.
