A survey made liy directors of the Milwaukee Vocational
school dealt with the reading- interests of 7,000 hoys and
-.iris hotween the ae.es of 11 and IS years who are gainfully
employed and who attend the school. It disclosed that they
were reading chiefly sensational newspapers, lurid manazines
Mid very few books. The directors of the school promptly
established class room libraries at the school with hooks sup
plied hy the public library.'' Pupils who wished to read for
credit were given an opportunity to do so. Others were en
couraged to browse for their own enjoyment. Tin? experi

An unusual lawsuit has been brought by a single woman
of middle ajjc in New York, against her brother. She sup
ported him and took can; of him from tin.' ajre of 10 until
he was able to cam his own living. After he ni'ew up, she
kept house for him many years, when she mie,ht have mar
ried and made a home of her own. lie prospered, and prom
ised to share his prosperity with her. Finally he married,
and neclecled her. Now she insists that he make nood his
promises and j-ivo her a just recompense for her sacrifice.
This little story will touch sensitive heartstiinns in many
thousand homes. How many women are there in this kind
who have made similar sacrifices, often without hope of re
ward but merely from a sense of duty, for some relative or
other? How many men, too? Put the men are fewer. Wom
en have a Kieater propensity for some such service. Per
sonal family burdens fall mainly on them. And too often
they do not jjet their reward this side of heaven.

When Will Uojiers went abroad a few years ao he cre
ated many lauchs by tolling what difficulties he had in eon

liorn. A similar case, with more serious implications, has re
cently come to lijrhl in the Fast.
A prominent architect of P.oston, II years old, was adopt
ed as a child from an orphanage. When ho was lil years
old the adoption was made legal. During the World War
ho served 22 months in Fiance in the American army, and
came homo again to these shores when the war was over.
Now he wants to go abroad, but the stale department has
refused him a passport because ho cannot furnish docu
mentary evidence of his birth. The orphanage from which
he was adopted, as i.s the custom in many such institutions,
kept no record whatever of his origin. Ho has boon trying
for half his lifetime to find any facts about his parentage,
hiring skilled lawyers to help in the search, but in vain.
There are two obvious wrongs here. In the first place,
the state department ought to be i,, apply common
sense in such a case and recognize the man as a citizen. The
other wrong is the failure of orphanages to file in some place
of public record all the information they have about their
small charges. However adopting parents may feci about
a child being happier in ignorance of (ho fact of his adoption,
there is nearly always a time in adulthood when th,. indi
vidual wants and needs to know all that the institution knew
of his birth.
