The McMinm ille Telephone Ketfister, known llirouuhout
the nation as an outstanding weekly newspaper, loses and
pains an owning partnership of rare ability-and a record of
fine achievement. Kaekett and Carnitine, who have sold out,
were valued .servants of one of Oregon's best eomniunties.
They published an unusual weekly paper, were properly
awarded with material success. The new owners, llladine &
Ton, are newspaper men of no less ability and McMinnville is
indeed fortunate that the Telephone llegister passes to such
ov nersljip. We have known Lars Jiladine for years. He was
publisher of the Kvening Kecord at Cedar Kalis, Iowa, of the
Clinton Daily Advertiser at Clinton, Iowa. He has a re
markably fine personality, an abundance of business judg
ment and executive ability. He is an able writer, a keen
rtudenl of politics and community affairs. His son hAs in
herited and acipiired the same characteristics. They would
be a force for progress and betterment in any community.

dition to''it's civic circle and welcomes the Jiladines to Ore
gon. The longer they stay the more they will realize that
Oiegon is a good state to be in and Iowa a good state to be

"America at present is undergoing a transition from a pro
duction era to an era of merchandising," observed a speaker
i t the recent International Advertising convention in Detroit.
"More than ever before, prosperity will depend upon abil
ity to extend markets, develop new uses for products and
create new consumer demand, rather than upon mere ability
to turn out large quantities of goods under mass production
methods.
"The output of tremendous quantities of goods is now
easily accomplished. Creating markets to assimilate such
output is the future problem of business." ,
At last is clearly recognized what economist.-; have long
leen saying in slightly different words. America leads the
v. oiltl in efficient production. The problem now is one nl' dis
tribution. If goods can be distributed as readily as they art'
produced by industry ami agriculture and mining, there will
be no limit to national prosperity and wealth.
There are three elements in this problem. One is trans
portation, which has been solved pretty well by (hp rail
roads and motor trucks. Another is the old problem of elim
inating middlemen and so bringing goods mure directly, effi
ciently and cheaply from produce!' to consumer. Creal prog
ress has been made, loo, in this respect, by "vertical trusts"
which contiol pearly all the means of production and dis
liibution; also by merchandising systems combining the
jobbing, wholesale and retail ends. The thinl element is the
publicity end of the distributing problem. This is th" impe
rial interest of the advertising men. ami possibly the biggest
factor of all.
