The next case to consider Is an original game going bid; fur exu tuple, three No Trumps with a love score, or three Hpades with a score of 20, SO or 35. The original gunie-bld Is not, as some would have It, a notice to the partner not to try for slam; The gunie-bid does not make any such demand; what it really tells the partner in this: "I have a hand so strong that 1 feel it would not be sufe for me to bid less than game because, there may be game In our combined hands and yet you might not have a Jump If I bid one less." A game-bid shows great strength, but not nearly as great us the bid fur more than game discussed last week; the latter virtually com mands the partner to show "an Ace If ho have it. When the partner of a game-bid-tW has one Ace and no other assis tance, unquestionably ho - should puss. : One Ace. is not apt to enable a gumc-bidder to make a slam; but if to the one Ace bo added oilier assistance, the situation Is very different. Before going further, we must consider what Is meant by "set- jtlng" a declaration and whether a game-bid necessarily sets the declaration (or contrary) A dec laration (suit or No Trump) la set when the partners have arrived at an understanding that it Is to be their final declaration, if they ob tain the contrnct. A declaration having been set, n bid by either 'partner In some other suit does not indicate a desire for a change; in fact, it Is understood that neither partner will leave, the otherina side declaration. ' I We snw last week Oiat an Initial hid of more than enough to go game operated to set thut declara tion und open the way Tor slam bidding; and we are to sec that a suit-bid which is exactly a gnme jfoer, sets the contract also, but thut a No' Trump game-goer does tftt ujwuys do so. because often it Ms desirable to retain the suit take out of an original No Trump game bid as a suit-shower, not a slam shower. The whys and wherefores of this distinction will be discussed tomor ;rof when the subject of slam bid ding la to be continued. : . 'CopyrlgM, John F. Dllle Coi, Mary Pickf ord Likes Sport ! Mary Pickford, who Buys she "UkcH sports clothes best," confirmed tho statement when fihn left I'arls after her re cent trip hy taking home a lnrge assortment. ' Her first choice was a blue and cream litld liKNtwelKht wool from I'atou, Bet on a yoke at the shoul ders, with buttons the entire length, the blotine with incrusta tions and the skirt pleated. Next came a white crepe satin made up on the flat side and trim med with the shiny. A checkered pattern in black und white trims the- sleeves, pockets and three V bnnds on the collar. 1 Plain Jersey In solf blue made Into n pli'ated skirt and three but ton coat with a blouse and white collar and vest showing1 an em broidery inotIC was another choice. ' Kor variety Miss Pickford added to her wardrobe- a white crepella evening cont trimmed with white fox fur and Incrustations, a blue printed chiffon evening dress and beige satin younge pajamas with unusually long trousers, I I-'rom the Jenny collection Miss Pickford selected a grey crepe de chine dress with a full, scalloped skirt set on Die dress with u scal loped yoke. The belt ties at the front with a fluffy bow. The slet-ves have appllqued trimming and the snug collar ties at the neck. Blue and lavender crepe de chine in a square print design with n pleated skirt and flounce at the bottom of the blouse was picked out for informal afternoon wear. Miss Pickford's visit wus slight ly marred by the ouesHion. "To bob or not to bob?" She found short hair predominating in Paris. I Incidentally, she refuses to try on clothes. Hhe is so tiny that she is simply lost in the smallest man nequin size. AGE 11 YEARS : HEIGHT 5 FEET H INCHES WEIGHT 126 POUNDS AGE 21 YEAR? HEIGHT 5 FEET 10 INCHEJS WEIQHT , 159 POUNDS Hy N K A Srrvkv CHICAGO, Juno 28, What are the averuge young men and young women like, in this day of Klnm ing Youth, anywuy? . - Dr. Itrginuld Kltz, associate pro fessor of medicine nt '.he Hurvurd unlvvrslly medical school, can nn swer that question about ns well an anyone can, ut leust us fur as phys ical characteristics go. Not long ago ho made q. series of exuiuinu tions of a large number of college boys and girls, ranging In uge from 19 to 2Ti; and in the current issue of Hygeiu, the magazine of the American Medical association, he summaris'.es his findings. Tho average girl, ho funis, la, first of nil, a bit underweight. 'Sh tends deliberately to un dernourish herself In order to keep thin," he explains. "One ges t lie Impression thut a girl's present uim is to keep thin ut all costs; fulling lo attain this end she tnuy become discouraged and conclude that the effort is more, bother than it is worth, in which case slid may go to Om oilier extreme' anil placidly eat herself Into u condition of ab normal obesity." y , In the second place, she doesn't wear quite enough clothing. ' Dr. Kltz found thut two-pounds of clothing, including shoe, is con sidered cxcesNlvo by the- n,veruge girl; 1 2 ounces seems just about right to n great many. - These two traits have effects which a doctor can readily spot. Too light clothing makes the uveruge girl constantly cold In the winter time, at any rate. Itody tem peratures fully two degrees below normal are often encountered; blood pressure also tends to be subnormal. The result Is not good for the health. 1 "She" the average girl "is con stantly below pur and thus liable to minor infections in the way of colds or sore throats and may read ily incur more serious troubles, writes Dr. Miss. "Thus In my group It was found that W per cent' of the women hud lost two or more weeks' time (rum minor illnesses during the preceding two years, while only HI per cent of the nn-n had been bothered by a similar loss of time, us u result of illness. 'Kven more striking was the number of girls who complained of gutting easily tlre.dt u complaint almost unheard of among the men. This, perhaps, is a more serious matter. The modern girl requires pep ut all costs. Her popularity and dash depend entirely on this altogether Indescribable character istic. It is not especially to ho won derod ut, therefore, that the mod ern undernourished girl who con tinually feels cold, who Is lluble to ininor-.infectlons und gets easily tired on very moderuto effort, ac quires the habit of oblulning pep by artificial means." On the whole, however, Hp. Kltz gives the average girl a good bill of health. "She was nctlvo and graceful In the handling of her body, had good posture, wus fairly rail, hud well formed shoulders und a smull waist, wus perhups a little thin, but well muscled and sturdy," be writes. "On the whole, she uppeared lo be perfectly healthy, both in mind und body, und wus much more of the athletic than the flapper type.'.
