Durinjr the pnst 12 months there have been plenty of
lwoplc who huve felt that the transatlantic aiiiihme flight
' was a panio not worth the cost. Those people have thrilled
nt the success of Lindbergh, Clinmberlin and the rest, but
i they have been deeply depressed by the tragedies. When
; plane after plane disappeard into the darkenss over the ocean
and failed to return, an increasing number of Americans felt
: that such flights should be given up entirely. No good could
come of them; why waste lives needessly? So run the pro
tests even with the success of the Southern Cross and the
J' rienriship.
Now, however, we are beginning to reap the benefits.
National Air Transport, Inc., is preparing to place seven
do luxe passenger planes in service between New York, Cleve
' land, Detroit, Toledo and Chicago, These planes will cany
M passengers apiece in enclosed cabins' and will make the
trip in seven hours. The company backing them believes they
will prove popular.' The company operating between Tort
: land and San Francisco is sold out practically every trip.
Aviation, at last, is coming into its own. Hut we should
realize that this advance is, in a great measure, due to the
ocean flights of the past year.
This new passenger service could have been offered two
or three years ago, as far as the mechanical end of it is con
, ceined. There existed then planes just as safe and pilots
just as skilled as the ones that will be used now. But the
! public was not ready for it then. People would not have
patronized such a line. They would have been afraid. Avia-
tion had not won public confidence.
It has that public confidence now. People aro willing to
trust their lives to airplanes. And the ocean flights of the
last 12 months are largely responsible. Not only the success
ful flights, but tho failures.
People have realized that if the airplane is developed to
, a point where a daring pilot can undertake tto fly across the
Atlantic without a stop, it is surely safe for shorter trips over
