"You convey too great n compliment when you say .1 have earned the right to the presidential nomination. , No man can establish an obligation upon any part of the ' American people. It has called me into two cabinets of two presidents. By these experiences I have observed the burdens and responsibilities of the greatest office in the t world. That office touches the happiness of every home. . It deals with the peace of nations. No man could think of , , it except in terms of solemn consecration. , "You ask me for a message: "A new era and 'new forces have come into our eco nomic life and our setting among nations of the world. Those forces demand of Ms constant study and effort, if prosperity, peace and contentment shall be main , tained. ... Hut the problems of the next four years are more than economic. In a profound sense they are moral and spiritual. This convention has sounded a note of moral leadership. "Shall tiie world have peace? Shall prosperity in this nation be more thoroughly distributed? Shall we build steadily toward the ideal of equal opportunity to all un people? Shall there bo secured that obedience to law which is the essential assurance of life at our institu tions? Shall honesty and righteousness in government and in business confirm the confidence of the people in their institutions and their laws? . "Government must contribute to leadership in answer to these questions. The government is more than admin istration ; it is power for leadership and co-operation with the forces of business ami cultiral life in citv, town and countryside. The presidency is more than executive responsibility. It is the inspiring svmbol of all that is . highest in America's purpose and ideals." The Observer reprints this portion of his message because it feels that every republican voter should read it, analyze it. It is an impressive message. It is doubtful if Hoover will write a better campaign speech than this between now and November. Considered in the light of his remarkable record of achievement during tho past twenty years, it is a very powerful argument for Mr. Hoover's election and is indicative of his nutional and world viewpoint, of his na tional and world citizenship. He is not California's candi date, nor Oregon's candidate, nor Iowa's candidate, though he was born, educated, and established residence in each state. Rather he is all-Amei ican. already as well known in Washington, D. C, as he is in his home city on the western coast and as well acquainted with the economic problems of the Mississippi valley as he is with those of the Columbia .Ilasin.
