There are few finer stories in medical annals. After Gorgus succeeded m conquering yellow fever in the West Indies nnd Panama, it was hoped that the disease could Ik; wiped out everywhere. l!ut in South America the disease is of a different type than in those places; and in Africa there is still a third type, more puzzling and more deadly than either of the others. Dr. Noguchi first went to South America, lie made a brilliant record there, overcoming amazing physical handi caps. Then, last fall, he sailed for West Africa to tackle the African variety of yellow fever. He had not gone far with his work before he himself had contracted the disease. Instead of dropping his work and devoting his efforts to cure himself, Dr. Noguchi kept at work. He used himself as a laboratory specimen, inoculating monkeys with his own blood and examining their bodies after they died. For a time it seemed that he would ultimately recover; then, just as he wis convalescing, he suffered an unexpected relapse and died. Heroism of that kind is beyond praise. There were no cheering throngs there in the little coast town; there was not even the soldier's stimulus of comrades sharing the same jato. Dr. Noguchi was by himself. Out he kept on working. in tne very lace ol death; and, before he died, he succeeded in isolating the germ of African yellow fever. Some day Africa will be as free of yellow fever as the Panama Canal zone now is. And most of the credit will go to the little Japanese doctor who gave his life to the Ui.sk of conquering the malady.
