Baker, the figures show, lias a school system operating at a minimum cost per pupil, the most favorable in the state i.inong the eight largest cities outside of Portland. Rut Bak-N er is not, we arc informed, reducing a bonded debt to the ex tent found hero and in other cities that have suffered grow ing pains. ''Baker's system has been rather stationary the iiust few years in that no great increase in enrollment has presented itself, and costs have been kept down accordingly. The story at Snlom, we would judge ironi iliis distance, is different. Salem has enjoyed much growth, has had to t nlarge its school system and school organization each year. Vet the cost per pupil is low, remarkably low. From all in formation available it would seem that extremely efficient uchool administration is responsible, a boiu: of hard-headed business men who are committed to good schools but who (re also intent on getting a dollar's worth of schools for a dollar. It's a condition to be envied and one that can well l o studied by any cities not occupying a position nearly as lavorable. La Grande and linker, the tables show, re now happily situated Imt a new school building (which is an absolute necessity two or three years from now if our .-ohools continue to gum) would affect the average of tho local district. It's a matter of great importance, since half our tax dollar goes for schools, and one that every taxpayer needs to be thinking about. discomfort and laying- up a stock of' aA'c h0lvn ' by ho t,''"1-- iof the University of OreKvn'. i ... ,,..,,,, . ate of Oregon, and thank you most, . -, , ....
