Woolworth company reports, after considerable , figuring, that its business turnover last .year .was $272,754, 945, and its net profit was $35,360,473. Also that business is growing healthily in the United States, Germany, England and, various other countries. It will pay a good many people to spend a minute or two contemplating those figures. Espe cially it will pay those who have a feeling that nickels and dimes don't count. , , :It is not a crime to kill yourself. That, at least, is the ruling' of the Massachusetts courts. Tha 'Boston police ar rested a man who jumped off a bridge into the river and took him to court, charging him with "attempting to cbfflmit 4 self murder," The judge, after a hearing, ruled that this ' was no crime.and discharged the man. Just what the sifc' nificance of this is we don't exactly know. If you're plan ' ning on suicide, it must be comforting to know that you 'won't be breaking any law when you voluntarily shuffle off ; this mortal coll. ' . , . !.. , W ' , ; i ' ' , HK'wV'-tev .' PROSPERITY AND ALASKA ("When the United States government acquired Alaska from Russia' in 18C7, Secretary of State Seward, whp engi neered the. deal was the subject' of much critici.snl in the press. ' The American people could hardly see the use of the new purchase; Alaska was dubbed "Seward's ice box" by the -scoffers. . : ' - : ,- :-; " ' , But in 1898, when gold was discovered, the tune changed. Alaska became Immensely valuable, and the wisdom of Sew ard's act was made evident. The gold rush didn't last, how ever. In the course of time the readily available ore wtts ex hausted. Fairbanks, which was a town of 20,000 people dur ing the height of the rush, declined to n village of. 2000. Alaska, once more, was looked upon as an unproductive, al most useless, waste. . ' . . - Now it appears that Fairbanks is going to regain some thing' of its former eminence. Hydraulic mining is to be un- i dertuken on a big scale. Gold deposits that could not be worked in the old style will yield a rich return if attacked by modem machinery; and, more than $10,000,000 has been spent in preparation for large-scale activities. - As a result, Fanrbanks' population has doubled, and is btill growing. The Alaska railroad, which connects Fair banks with the seaports of Anchorage and Seward, has been reaping the benefit of the new activity. For the first time in its history it is showing a profit. Nor is this all. Tho Department of the Interior, under whose wing' Alaska nestles, estimates that the now mining operations will last for at least 25 yenre. By attracting men and money to Fairbanks and vicinity, they will stimulate other forms of production, Agricultuiiil lands are rising in Value; Alaska's soil is fertile, and the department believes that the impetus which the new mining ventures will give to farming will have a lasting effect. Alaska is, potentially, a rich country, even if it had not a grain of gold dust. It has good land, forests, many kinds of ore-bearing rocks, fine fisheries, abundant water power sites. Some day it will be a populous and prosjwrous land. It may well be that the present developments at Fairbanks will be the beginning of the rise of Alaska to a place in the com munity of states.
