The contest has much in it of local interest' because ' Un ion
county men, and men well known in. this section, arc pnl-
nble strong contenders. In the republican ranks, Kred-Kid-jdlc,
now stale senator and sUtediianager of the Hoover cain
jpaign, has been mentioned for some time by his friends as a
jlikely candidate should Sinnott retire. Another man pro'm
'Dient in tho district in republican circles for years and known
'to have entertained thoughts of running for congress is
:l5iuce Dennis, foimpr publisher of, The Observer, ex-state
senator from this county and now publisher of the Herald
rnd News at Klamath Falls. Both are looked upon as strong
contenders if they should seek the nomination.
, Several other prominent republicans may go after tho
nomination Roy Uitncr of Pendleton, Senator IHitler of
The Dalles, and Jay Upton of Bend. The last of this trio has
r. greater acquaintance throughout the district, probably due
to his campaign for the republican nomination for governor
.against Patterson two years ago, while Kilner and Butler are
nearly as well known through their long activity and interest
tin state politics. Others are mentioned and it is possible that
a rather unknown candidate might be picked if the congres
sional committee does the job, as in the case of Worrell
last year. .
! Among the democrats the district can rather confidently
Icrpcct that Walter Pierce, Union county's ex-governor, will
be in the race and will very likely win the nomination. Demo
crats have been anticipating the present situation and have
looked lo tho former governor as the best vole-getter in their
ranks.. Pierce has, without question, a great deal of strength
m Eastern Oregon and would make a campaign to be re
membered if he were nominated.
Regardless of the outcome, Uith the primary and general
elections now take on new interest for voters in this district.
Political intrigue and wire-pulling will concern tho candidates.
What should concern the voters is the selection of a repi-e-Sf.ntativo
who will take Sinnott's place with credit, who will
serve both the district' and the stale in a competent, con
scientious manner.
