expenses. The expenses of a
manufacturing business include
labor, raw materials, supplies, re
pairs, light and heat, power, sell
ing costs, administration, and
other similar charges.
A professional man, such ns a
lawyer, doctor, architect, dentist,
etc., may deduct the post of sup
plies used In his practice, expenses
paid in the operation and repair
of nn automobile used In making
professional calls, dues to profes
sional societies, subscriptions to
professional journals, office rent,
cost of light, fuel, water, and tele
phone used in his office, and the
hire of office assistants.
The farmer may deduct all
amounts paid in the production,
harvesting, and marketing of
crops', including: labor, cost of seed,
find . fertiliser used, cost of minor
repairs to farm buildings (other
than his dwelling), and small tools
used up in the course of a year or

Wild Horse
To Play In
"Wild Beauty"
Hex, the Kin of Wild Horses,
the star of I'nlversnl's "Wild
Jteauty", which show at the Star
theater Saturday only, is not the
only wild horse appearing in this
mnsslve- production.
Ilesides the wild horses In (he
lending, roles, there Is a herd, of
1600 ownerless horses who wan
der the Arizona hill country with
out 'molestation -from ranchers.
This entire herd was rounded up
by cowboys and kept penned Iri a
hot canyon until they were need
ed by Director Henry Mneltae,
Tor scenes In "Wild Heauty"
tt took 25 of the Southwest's
cleverest punchers two days to
drive the herd Into the ennyon.
The horses were spotted early one
morning wandering In one of the
lied Knoll valleys and the cow
boys were instantly despatched to
their work.
During the first day well over
half of the horses were driven Into
the "canyon. . Durlnjr . the night
ninny. of the other horses entered
the ennyon of their own volition to
Join their leniler who was one of
the first captured and during the
next day. the . remainder . of the
herd with the exception of a few
strays, was trapped also.
! When 'time came for the film
ing of the "rescue" sequence. June
Marlowe, the feminine lead, was
placed a 'hundred. yards from the
mouth pf the canyon and the herd
was driven out by the cowboys.
Meahwhtle cameras were grinding.
-The only thing between Miss
Marlowe and death was the strong
arm of Hugh Allan, the leading
hiati. He rode Into the scene and
pulled Miss Marlowe onto the sad
dle behind hint with the horses
thundering not more than M feet
away, "If bis horqc bail tripped or
if his grasp on Miss Mnrlowe had
failed a casualty would surely have
resulted.

There is an appalling shortness
of Duncan SlsteVs.
This much was clearly demon
strated when those . two sprightly
Imps of merriment,- Rosetta nnd
Vivian, opened a three-duy engage
ment at the Arcade theater yester
day1 in their first screen vehicle.
"Topsy and Eva." More or their
Inimitable brand of humor would
cure tho world of bluet.
Although the picture carries the
plot of "Cmle Tom's Cabin"
throughout It-r-even the charac
ters it Is nn uproarious comedy
of liiauy ludicrous situations and
movements that should easily
rank It as one of the most enjoy
able laughing films of yeai;s. The
antics of Rosetta Duncan In her
black-face role of "Topsy." the
little slave girl,, are so efferves
cent and absurd that they produce
laughs without tho slightest seem
ing effort. Vivian Duncan as the
little angel child, "Evn." Is an ex
cellent foil for her sister's natural
gift of comedy.
"Topsy and Eva" was adapted
from the musical comedy of the
same name in which the Duncans
toured the country for four suc
cessive years, As a laugh-producer
tho film will take Its place among
the best comedies produced In
Hollywood for several years. It
has an element of pathos every
now and then, as some of tho
'Cnclo Tom" dramatic, situations
are built up. but Invariably these
are turned into tune comedy Just
as they reach the point of making
the audience shed tears.
Rosetta nnd Vivian 1 Duncan
have established themselves oil the
stage as comediennes without su
periors; their screen debut will
certainly earn them a like honor In
the realm of shadowland.
