Jan. 14. Ill Southern -Idaho had a hundred million dollar crop last year, so we are told. Hejraidless of the amount, Idaho has "come hack" rapidly. It will continue to do so. And mostly as a result of diversified agriculture. Many people contend that the Northwest will enjoy excellent prosperity in 1928, primarily from agriculture. Nothing can better offset the lumber depression than that. The American public is long: suffering. Hickman, self confessed kidnaper and murderer and bandit, consults his lawyer and pleads "not guilty says he didn't do these things because he was insane when he did them. The worst of it is that he will get away with it if his lawyer is clever enough or his jury sentimental enough. When are, we go ing to put a stop to that variety of justice? When are we going to change our laws on insanity as defense for -murder? When will we have sense enough to see that minimum Eng lish crime and severe English justice are closely related and deserving of copy in this country? Over there they are just as crazy when they kill'people ns they are in Anerica but they hang 'em just the same. - - - AMERICAN SOCIALISM Reading, Ta., which was scheduled to pass into 'the hands t)f a ''socialist administration'' on Jan. 2, evidefttly-'isnrV go ing to lie very socialistic. The way that election happened to le won by the socialist prbup is interesting and illuminating. Reading had never licen known as a "radical" city. It is a prosperous industrial community of 112,000 people, about 50 miles. from Phila delphia, and has run along year after year pretty much the same politically as other Pennsylvania industrial cities. There was no big socialist group. Thej e was not much social ist agitation. The socialist organization did not submit a ticket for the primary. I.ut after the old party organization had nominated their men, the socialist leaders decided they could do lietter. So they called a party meeting at kibor Lyceum hall. Exact ly 50 citizens responded, IS men and two women. They nom inated a ticket that seemed to make a hit with a lot of Rending citizens who had never been classed as socialists. The result was that they elected their candidate for mayor, a cigar. maker, by a vote nearly as big as that for the republicans and democrats together, and also a socialist higher lhaii jfHtr-nltiy hnt H!ppllen 1 nn nnnlcl. are I IK III all, I 11 Ih experteil that; enrn (now) Nn. "Thousands supponed us who never before voted for socialists, ' says the mayor-elect we would check the ever-growing debts which have !een forcing taxes higher every year, and adjust assessments so the expense of the poor would not be increased." ' It is well to realize the real meaning of this statement. Socialism is usually thought of as aiming at the division of property, taking from the lich in order to give to the "prole tariat" who haven't anything. Vet here we find thousands of American citizens voting the socialist ticket in the expecta tion that the socialists will save them money by lowering taxes on their proivity. Socialism is voted in by property owners, some of whom call themselves socialists and some of whom do not. Tli's is charact-'ristically American. We have no "prole tariat." H shows why American socialism is not very dan gerous, and is h.m?!y socialism at all, but individualism, ac cepting individual owni rship.
