It helped customers, and helped them, for people to be able to drive up to theif doors to make purchases. Hut that was in the early days of motoring. The situation changed. Automobiles and trucks jammed the streets, especially when they were parked. Street after (street was marked "no parking," and still the congestion jjrew. Merchants found automobiles a handicap. I'arked cars kept trade away, and moving cars swept by in a dense, helpless mass, its units unable to stop and shop as of old. So down-town meivhants began moving outside of the "Loop" district, or establishing branch stores outside. Mer chants in the outlying areas began to profit, because there was room there for parking--or they could make room. Finally the inevitable has happened. The Chicago city council lias absolutely forbidden the parking of motor cars anywhere in the Loop. They may pass through, but must not stop there except, for letting passengers in and out. Here is seen, in a big city, what is happening, or going to happen,: to every growing city in America.
