The operation is mil considered one calling for a iih Hwree of skill, but if the nwiior were to put the rings he in t finis using to the wime tests are required of all rings put into Olrts mobiles at the factory he would require considerable, '-equipment nml training just 'to select rings that would function most efficient ly. V; . ". Kvery compression ring used nt the OlilsmoMle factories must pass ffiur tests for roindness, flatness, thickness and gap size. Two 'na Mlant" light machines and two sets of gauges are used for these tests. To give perfect results and elim inate any chance, of side wall wear a compression ring should he as perfectly round as is the cylinder. To insure tills every ring is. placed Into a cylindrical fixture the inside diameter of which is exactly that of an Oldsmobile engine cylinder. This fixture Is placed upon the liun top of Tin illuminated hous ing. That portion of the glassin side the lnnor diameter of the ring is blackened so that light only shows in circle of the thickness of the rintr. . If the ring Is not per fectly round a ray of light ts seen between the outer edge of the ring and the side of the fixture. In -fich cases the ring is rejected. 1 To make, positive that rings arc fl;it and parallel, each ring is placed upon a hollow,' gourd-tike devico containing tin electric lamp mid having a perfectly flat, circu lar top approximately three Inches ia diameter. A lid -like, oover is lowered over the ring. Ah the ! ;.nver i kjippnr nver surface of the lid and the Hiirfaco of the fixture are llel within .0001 inch, the. slightest variation In fl-itness or niimllelism is instantly shown by a light ray.
