Hunt, head. of a well known American school for the education of educators. "Hooks," he complains, "are crammed with second-hand experience. They are the records of what somebody else saw, felt or said. We have clung to them year after year largely out of sheer laziness. It is so much easier to teach when all you have to do is to compel the children to read something in a book and then repeat it to you. Hut life all around us is crammed with educative materials. Within a few years, I predict, children will go out in excursions into shops, factories and on the streets to learn nt first hand." Maybe they will, more or less. Hut it is certainly going to add to the traffic problem and wony a lot of mothers if all the children in the public schools are to be poured onto the street and towed around town by their teachers, to leant everything by direct observation. The old Peripatetic school in Greece used to use that meth od. The instructor talked to his pupils while they trailed after him in the open air. That doubtless helped to keep them awake. Hut the teacher kept them pretty well outside of the congested districts; and anyway, learning was less com plicated in those days. Now there are a million things for children to learn. How can they learn them all at first hand? A long lifetime would be fiir too short for the education of the child who tried to learn everything for himself, or for the teacher who tried to show him everything and explain it on the spot. Hooks are inadequate, but they are short-cuts to knowl edge. The bright child, through them, may multiply his knowledge infinitely, packing into a few years tho condensed experience of many ages ami millions of lives.
