If one is a crime, why isn't the other, when the loss to society is far greater? What right have we to say that the killing of a man is a hunting accident anil the killing of an elk is a crime? , A fine of $1000, which the law allows, is a heavy penalty. In ordinary circumstances it means more than the offender can Dossihlv have or hone to borrow. If he can't pay it, he works it out nt $2 a day in jail and the fine becomes a jail sentence of more than a year and a half. A year and a half in jail for killing an elk, with the very great probability that the killing was accidental and unintentional. .There are many reasons, we imagine, why elk should be protected against extermination. Jhere are an equal num ber of reasons why violations should be guarded against and offenders punished. We doubt, however, the good sense of a law that provides so heavy a penalty. If it is justified, espe cially in accidental cases, then a charge of manslaughter should le possible against the hunter who shoots and kills his human companion.
