The most obvious evidence 01 progress in La Grande arc the two, leautiful new hotels. The community is to Ik? con gratulated on having such structures and, though there is no apparent need for such an abrupt and large increase in hotel facilities, we feel confident that they will not le too much for the city that we will have within the next few years. Hotel business, when La Grande laconics known as it will deserve as a hotel city, should more than double, and the increasing volume of automobile tourists who stop at hotels will be an important factor in the' future. The new hotels, together with' numerous other improvements, arc sig nificant of future possibilities, of the city that can be. For some years Denmark has been practically without capital punishment. Now the Minister of Justice proposes to make it legally so. He will introduce in the next parlia ment looking to the statutory abolition of capital punish ment. This legislation will at the same time provide for life imprisonment without possibility of pardon. This is .some thing that appeals to many Americans who do not feel right alxiut capital punishment, although they hold that as long as it is the penally provided by law for certain crimes it should be carried out. Life imprisonment, it is recognized, would be just as effective as capital punishment in protecting so-: ciety, if it were to be really "life" imprisonment.
