Thornton, M. t. Siii i Dirgo, al. Member Gorgaa Memorial Inst it ute We frequently hear people say. "When I was a child we did no; have all these serious infections like mastoid and sinuses and only rarely did we have tonsil hi a." What Is the answer? There are several. Twenty-five years ago the death rate among children was .no p,r cent higher than It is now. Scien tific medicine has made It possi ble to save the lives of many chil dren that formery succumbed In early infancy. In other words w- are saving the weak. Whether or not this is the best thing for lit" human race Is not a question for the scientific physician lo discuss; his business is to heal the sick and save life. Twenty-five yea i H ago econonHc' conditions wen quite different from what they are today. l-'ollis who at t hat time had only t he bare necessities of life now live in comparative luxury and thei.- children eat things that a re anv thing but necessary. Their homes are comfortable to the point of over-comfort for the rearing of children with resistance to dis oaye. ( H'er-hea led air predispos-'S to IoiisUh and adenoids, lowers re sistance to infections, and Kenei ally w'eakens 1 he growing child. Twenty-five years apo ft was a day's journey with the horse aiot htitrgy to the city and back to J he farm or village. Today ra pid I ra asportation makes contact wit h the masses easy for everyone. The danger or crowding into picture shows and other public gat hcritnrs is forjjoHen or Ignored. Thus iii feClion is spread wilh the rapidity of the automobile or the speed of the emplane. Most infections in childhood bruin as a cold in t he nose or throat. If. these mild in fections were treated more seiil ously most of t hem would nev-r become serious. Twenty-five yea rs ago iliaKno'. tic methods were such that many conditions now promptly reeoir nized were unknown or overlooked by the best physicians. What to ho am) Winn Not lo 1.
